 Day 89- Opportunity

📝 Reflection

 Psalm 34: 4-5

I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.

This particular chapter and Psalm is one David wrote in reference to a time he pretended to be insane in front of Abimelech who as a result sent him away. David had an opportunity and took it even though it meant looking crazy in front of others.  I think there is a interesting lesson here, one that we all have sometimes multiple a day. We always have opportunities in front of us, some more obvious than others. Are your eyes, heart and mind open or closed to seeing them. We are literally surrounded if we are tuned in and awake.

Opportunities are often missed because we have those voices in our heads that tell us, ‘hey that’s not for you’, ‘who do you think you are?’, ‘people will laugh’, ‘they will get mad’, ‘I will look stupid’, ‘if I change my mind or apologize I will look stupid’, blah blah blah. Those voices seem so right in the moment, right? What if you acknowledged those voices, but did ‘it’ anyway?  Really what is the worst that can happen. You might actually look crazy? YUP. People might think you are weird? YUP. People might laugh? YUP. Many thought King David in his day was crazy, and now look? He stayed focused on what God thought, what God said about him and seized the opportunities that God presented to him and we now look to him as an example of ‘how to be a person after God’s own heart’.

What if that inkling, feeling or intuition was an invitation to a great opportunity to heal a relationship, get a promotion, learn a new skill, express your creativity and uniqueness?  What if you accepting this opportunity and going for it inspires another to wake up and notice their opportunities? If we were all willing to get uncomfortable and push through our fears we make it less ‘weird’, crazy or awkward for others.  There are so many examples in the Bible besides David. We wouldn’t have most of the New Testament if Paul didn’t take the opportunity given to him on the road to Damascus. What if Peter had been too dejected and hard on himself and felt unworthy and missed the opportunity to be the ‘rock’ that the church was built on.

The further away or more outrageous it seems could mean the more impactful it could be. Think about it, a repentant murderer or a mother who can forgive the person who murdered her child and go public with it. Someone who acts out of anger and does something hurtful and comes back to admit their mistake and ask for forgiveness. Pretty powerful for those involved but even beyond that to people who watch and maybe take that into their own lives and relationships. Redemption and forgiveness are just one of many types of example of opportunities.  And don’t let the potential impact and bigness be the only criteria, because really you won’t alway know the impact. And big impact sometimes happen in the seemingly insignificant interactions, you just never know. God can and does use anything!

I heard a story the other day from a mother who has a young adult son who has distanced and isolated himself and rather than just getting frustrated with him and the situation, she prayed about it and she asked others to pray, she put books in his room hoping that he might take the opportunity to pick one, she sought wise counsel from friends and pastors, but an unlikely thing happened a little cute older Greek woman with broken english who helps them manage their house had a deep conversation with this young man in a seemingly ‘random’ way that helped him and gave him hope and he felt seen and heard. She took the opportunity to be interested in someone. Now the whole family is on the way towards healing, all because a house cleaner didn’t believe any voices in her head that might have been telling her that she was too insignificant to speak up or talk or her presence in this home at this time didn’t matter.

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

What opportunities have you not taken? It isn’t too late! God is always right on time. Maybe you can open your self up to possibility that you need to take an opportunity that is in front of you now? Be open, you just never know how God is going to use you in a mighty way if you will give him the opportunity. Be willing to seem foolish, to risk judgement, to even seem crazy just like David, it just might save your life or even someone else’s.
