📝 Reflection
Matthew 20: 22
But Jesus answered them by saying to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?”
25-28:
But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to face his life as a ransom for many.”
In this particular passage of scripture the mother of James and John asked Jesus if they could be in the place of honor next to Jesus in heaven on his right and left and this was Jesus’s response not only to them but to all of the disciples. Jesus lead by example and he needed the disciples to understand that they were also expected to do the same thing. We can’t just talk the talk and not walk the talk. I mean we can, but people are inspired and lead by examples both good, bad and in between. That is just the way it works. We also lead ourselves by example. He came to show us how it is done, not just teach us with words and parables. He walked it out literally. We have to do the same if we really want to lead and teach people, including ourselves.
Many of us are telling ourselves lots of things but then doing other things that may even be in direct opposition. A simple and common example is being physically fit. Many of us know that it is important and also good for us to move more. When we ‘know’ better and don’t do it we are not leading by example even for ourselves. The the way to lead effectively is by doing what you are hoping others and yourself will learn. You must move even though and if and even when you don’t want to, feel like it, don’t have time etc.. Eventually through the experience and example in action you will become fit and you will likely even learn to enjoy it in the process. When you are doing it ‘even if’ and ‘even when’ it can be a bitter cup to drink at the time, but this is in service to our desire to be fit and for our health. We become a slave to our self for our higher good, rather than a slave to our immediate comfort, pleasure, excuses, so on and so forth.
Like wise we need to keep this in mind as we interact in the world whether it is in our roles at work, at home, at church, just interacting socially, running errands, just doing life we are all leaders by our example. What example are you leading by. Are you sending mixed messages to yourself and others. Are you pretending you have it all together, trying to deny and keep secret any struggles you might be having? Being a humble and vulnerable servant leader who can admit their struggles and pain and also their success with overcoming is what speaks volumes. It also gives permission for others to be human and admit their struggles as well. It is our pride, ego and fear that will try to isolate us and tell us that we have to pretend to have it all together especially as leaders. Jesus came to show us a better, upside down way, but it tastes bitter at first, do it anyway! The last will be first and the first will be last in God’s Kingdom economy.
There is a well known story that is about a woman who took her son to see the Dali Lama She asked, “Dalai Lama, can you please tell my son to stop eating sugar. It’s not good for him, and he won’t listen to me. He respects you, and I know he will listen to you.” The Dalai Lama said, “Fine. Come back in three weeks.” Three weeks later, the woman came back with her son. The Dalai Lama was ready, and he said, “Son, you should stop eating sugar. It is not good for you.” The woman was pleased, but also confused. She said, “Why did it take you so long to say a simple thing?.” The Dalai Lama replied, “When you first came to me, I had not stopped eating sugar myself.”
