 Day 112- Know your audience

📝 Reflection

Proverbs 1: 4-7

These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young.

Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables, the words to the wise and their riddles.

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Yay, we are beginning a new adventure into Proverbs, and I do think it is going to be an adventure!  As familiar as I thought I was with the book of Proverbs, I apparently had never taken the time to read the very beginning🤦‍♀️. I had no idea that there was an introduction with instructions on how to read and use the book and how it would land depending on who the audience was. You might be shaking your head at me at my ‘simple-mindedness’ and novice approach, or you might be just like this saying ‘me either!!’ No matter, it is where I am and that is just fine! I am going to grow in wisdom over the next three weeks, that is exciting!

So as we can see from the above instructional verses above depending on where you are in your spiritual journey the various proverbs will have a different meaning and learning for you. That is just so cool! Of course this is how the whole bible is, but that this is specifically designed this way is pretty neat!  As a parent, how I talk with my five year old is going to be different than how I speak to my 15 yr old, or my 25 yr old. I would love that I could design something that would speak to each age and stage that is said one way but able to be understood by each as they need with their level of understanding. That is what God has done through Solomon here in proverbs.

Ok, enough nerding out over it. As I read this and I would encourage you to read along with me, today’s reading is Chapter 1, tomorrow is Chapter 2, it will reveal to us where we are in our spiritual development. But no matter where you are you can learn from it, so there is a subtle warning for those who think of themselves as wise, there is always more to learn, so stay humble and keep learning and growing. As we relate to others it is helpful to know where they are in their knowledge of certain things right?  If we are talking about cars, and I am a mechanic and I know a lot, I am going to talk to and relate to another car enthusiast much differently than I would someone who knows nothing about cars, right?  In order to be on the ‘same page’ we’ve got to know our audience.

As we approach God and the Bible it is helpful to know our own level and what type of audience we are. If I think I am further along than I am and I dive into the deep end, it is just going to end up in frustration for me and probably leading to guilt, shame, negative self talk etc which eventually leads to giving up.  There is nothing wrong with being a novice or a beginner! Let me shout that so those of you in the back can hear me! THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING A BEGINNER! In fact it is a beautiful place to be, especially when you can admit it and welcome it, then things can get interesting -novelty is awesome. Possibility opens up for those with an open mind of curiosity and newness!

Many of us, me included got the memo that being an adult means you automatically just know things and you can’t be a beginner anymore or at least admit it! Being a perfectionist and a people pleaser this was especially true for me. Thinking you have to have everything figured out or pretending like you do is exhausting. I am so glad that I was willing to humble myself and shed the weight of this burden.  I still have a lot more humble pie to eat, but it is starting to taste good and I am almost craving it, but the first few bites are bitter, not gonna lie! So before we move forward, do an honest check-in with your self and think of yourself as your own audience - do you know where you are? Are you simple, young, wise, or are you foolish?  I admittedly was a fool for a long time and I ‘choked on my own schemes and was nearly destroyed by my own complacency’ (1:v31-32). You can’t go or grow without knowing where you are!
