Exodus 34:28
'Moses remained there on the mountain with the Lord forty days and forty nights. In all that time he ate no bread and drank no water. And the Lord wrote the terms of the covenant—the Ten Commandments —on the stone tablets. '
The paradox of life and my faith journey and learning and leaning into the upside down ways of God makes everyday life a wild and mysterious adventure. The deeper I go, the more I am realizing that my life is not all about me AND yet it kinda is.
To continue on the conversation of legacy, we each leave a legacy whether we intend to or not, that is just a fact. We are all interconnected, nothing and no one stands alone. We all affect each other whether we want to or not. The phrase ‘as long as I am not hurting anyone..’ gets used a lot in our society. I know I have used it before to justify something I probably deep down knew I shouldn’t be doing (hello 🍷). I am sure we all have. But some of us wear this attitude like a suit of armor or as a lifestyle. This attitude can be very seductive right? It can also take us down a path that eventually leads to isolation, shame, regret and hopelessness.
The paradox that the freedom of free will and choice when combined with a ‘always look out for #1’ approach that is focused the now’ness’ of life and avoiding pain and seeking pleasure and comfort is that we can often end up feeling imprisoned by the consequences of this very ‘freedom’. If we can remember to zoom out and always keep the bigger picture in mind and the truth that we are interconnected and that life is a long game, we stand a better chance of leaving a meaningful and positive legacy.
This is one of the underlying messages I am getting as I am reading through Exodus. The Israelites just couldn’t remember to zoom out and keep their eyes, minds and hearts focused on the bigger picture. They were getting stuck and mired in the ‘reality’ of their current circumstances and kept demanding quick fixes. Just one example- Moses climbed Mt. Sanai to received the 10 commandments, he was gone from the people for 40 days. In that time, they gave up and demanded a god, any god would do.. so Aaron melted gold and made a golden calf for the people to worship.
Luckily for them Moses was a man who thought about the bigger picture and was obedient to his and HIS calling and intervened on behalf of the people and God graciously spared them once again. Moses knew it wasn’t about him AND he knew and understood that God and his people needed him to be who he was destined to be for all of us. You and I are still benefiting from his legacy. It would be hard to find a person on earth today who has not heard the name of Moses and doesn’t also know at least a little about his story (HIStory).
