 Day 43- In Pieces

📝 Reflection

 Judges 19:29-30

When he got home, he took a knife and dust his concubine’s body in to twelve pieces. Then he sent one piece to each tribe throughout all the territory of Israel.

Everyone who saw it said, “Such a horrible crime has not been committed in all the time since Israel left Egypt. Think about it! What we going to do? Who’s going to speak up?”

Today’s reading is a doozy. Pretty horrific story all around, and uncomfortable to read much less meditate and pray about for what lesson we can take from it and find a practical application. This is the truth and the miracle of God’s word being living and dynamic and an absolute adventure!

So I will continue from yesterday as we learned that everyone was doing what seemed right in their own eyes and the absolute chaos and destruction that living that way can take us. We can literally feel like we our selves are in pieces and that our lives are broken and in pieces.

Back to the story; prior to the murder and dismemberment of this concubine, we find the couple on the road back Ephraim, the home of the Levite. Against his better judgement and being lost in the people pleasing of his host, the father of the concubine, they set out on the road at a dangerously late hour. They are not able to make it to a safe place to stay for the night. They are invited in by someone who notices them who is also from Ephraim, but it is too late. A group of lawless town folk up to no good and looking to satisfy their desires, seek them out to abuse them.  The concubine is sacrificed as an offering to these crazed men, to satisfy their desires. She dies as a result of the abuse and her husband the Levite seeks to avenge her death and ‘wake up’ the people of Israel that they must not allow this chaos and evil to go unanswered any longer. So he chops up his own wife and sends pieces of her out. WHOAH! That definitely gets the point across, and then war ensues against the Benjamites.

When we are lost and we are no longer tethered to God and His guiding light and principles we end up divided. We are not safe when we place our trust in our own desires, thoughts and sense of direction and trying to please other humans vs. doing what we know is good for us.
