📝 Reflection
Joshua 22: 26-27. “So we decided to build the altar, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a memorial. It will remind our descendants and your descendants that we, too, have the right to worship the Lord at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings. Then your descendants will not be able to say to ours, “You have no claim to the Lord.”
The tribes of Gad, Reuben and half the tribe of Manasseh were allotted land that was east of the Jordan as Moses had promised. The tribal leaders must have had a meeting and come a common conclusion and were concerned that the Jordan River would be the assumed and clear dividing line for the people of Israel. They thought ahead and were concerned that their descendants and the descendants who were west of the Jordan would forget that theses tribes where also God’s people. So they decided to build an altar of remembrance of their identity, so that future generations would not question this. They called this altar ‘Witness’
Joshua 22: 34 The people of Reuben and Gad named the altar ‘Witness,’ for they said, “It is a witness between us and them that he Lord is our God, too.”
I think this was so smart!! We can really learn from this. We need reminders of who we are and whose we are. This is also importance from a legacy perspective. We human forget and can get so confused. I don’t know about you but I can suffer from amnesia daily, much less over a large span of generational time! They saw a big obstacle - literally - the Jordan river, as a potential defining line of God’s people on ones side and not God’s people on the other. They wanted protect the descendants on both sides from this confusion. Brilliant!
I am going to keep this shorter today to reflect on this myself with you. I know that for those of us who have allowed maladaptive coping strategies and dysfunctional ways of relating to others into our lives and potentially even passed these down, we personally need reminders of this. It is so easy to ‘fall back’ into our old ways and forget. Our brains are so powerful - we really need to respect our brains! It seemed like the tribes east of the Jordan did! The alter acted like a ‘guardrail’ to keep them and also the descendants solid in their true identity as God’s people.
