📝 Reflection
Ecclesiastes 2:18-20
I came to hate all my hard work here on the earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned. And who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish? Yet they will control everything i have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun. How meaningless! So I gave up in despair, questioning the value of all my hard work in this world.
It is kind of comforting to know that the wisest man in the world struggled with these feelings too! There is truly nothing new under the sun ☀️, and yet there is! It is all about perspective. When we get too caught up in I, me and mine it can lead to feelings inadequacy, not enough-ism and questioning the meaning of it all. The ego, wants to Edge God Out and can slip into the trap of only thinking and seeing things as they pertain to us. Also, wanting to judge and control what ‘we’ have created.
I like using this acronym for Ego (edging god out) because that is exactly the trap we fall into. Speaking of this, lets use this ‘trap’ as an analogy. Lets say you fall into a 🕳 , all you can see is your predicament, the floor and the walls of the hole, the little bit of sky that you see is far away and just a small circular framed piece of the sky. But from your vantage point, this is the ‘whole’ world. It might seem hopeless, everyday you wake up and try to climb the same walls out, only to slide back down, never reaching the top. Feels futile, hopeless and useless. This is your reality. But that doesn’t mean it is the whole of reality, and it doesn’t make things meaningless just because you don’t see the whole of it.
I am a big fan of the Matrix movies. Do you want to take the red pill💊 or the blue🔵 pill. The red pill in the movies represents being awake to the truth of reality, the blue pill means you are plugged into the virtual world of the matrix. Both seem and feel ‘real’. These are the philosophical questions that some of us choose to wrestle with. We want to know what our lives mean, what the purpose is, why our work, behavior, choices matter at the end of the day.
Another author and teacher I have learned a lot from, Jordan Peterson, puts this in terms of order and chaos. Our individual choices matter because they not only affect us individually but they also contribute to the whole for better and for worse, towards order or chaos. It is really easy when I am standing in the bottom of that hole 🕳 to succumb to thinking my view from the bottom is all that there is. When I start believing and living from that place it eventually leads to depression, or anxiety and those things usually end up creating chaos.
This will be an enlightening journey with Solomon through the book of Ecclesiastes as we ponder the meaning of it all. I spent my 20’s intentionally choosing to believe that it was all meaningless, YOLO (you only live once), live it up, have fun.. Then I became a mom and started to wonder and slowly started to open my heart ❤️ to thinking beyond myself and my perspective. It has been a long and winding road and I feel like I am just getting started. I don’t need to know what the meaning is anymore, I just choose to believe that it does have meaning and it helps my life have order and purpose.
