📝 Reflection
Psalm 18:
29-32
In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall. God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. he is a shield for all who look to him for protection. For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock? God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect….
34-35 He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me and your help has made me great.
David stepped into his potential, because he didn’t see it just as his own. He saw his potential as a vehicle for God’s potential and power to be made manifest. He knew by limiting his potential he was limiting God’s potential. He didn’t listen to the voices of judgement in his own head, from other people, from his enemies, from his circumstances, he stood on the solidness of what he knew to be true about God.
Let that sink in.
It wasn’t about him, … and it was. It’s not about you, …. and it is. It’s not about me, …and it is.
Who am I to limit God? When I listen to my limiting beliefs and stories, fear, other peoples discomfort, judgement, my circumstances I limit God. Who do I think I am, who do you think you are? God gave the human body, mind, heart and spirit the potential to be a strong and have a high capacity for demonstrating God’s glory and power. When we limit ourselves and think that is all about us and we have to do it in our own strength that is when we actually stunt our growth.
David is a shining example because he doubted himself at times, but he did it anyway. He was scared and did it anyway. He heard all of the judgement and naysayers and he did it anyway. It seemed hopeless, and he did it anyway. He was confident in who he was because of who God was, and there for he knew who and whose he was. When he was chosen to be king it didn’t just happen overnight, it was a process. David rose from humble shepherd, musician, servant, armor bear, to giant slayer, to son in law, general.. he rose through the ranks. He grew into his potential step by step, he listened to the guidance of his Lord and he trusted him in the specifics of how he was created and designed and also refined through his life experiences. He trained his body so that his muscles, agility and fighting skills could reach their potential. He became the warrior that God assigned him and created him to be for God. It wasn’t about him, and it was.
God asked him to show up in life and in all of the circumstances, so that God could fully show up through him. In the well known Goliath story, David took off the armor that was given to him and shocked everyone by going against Goliath how he was designed, equipped and trained. He trusted God that he was a shepherd for ‘such’ a time as this, he was a great Shepherd who knew how to protect his sheep from predators with his sling shot, and he trusted God to show up in that situation. He didn’t look to fulfill the expectations of people but he was whole heartedly fixed on God.
How does this land with you today? For some this is a really hard message to receive, I know it was for me. As humans it is very natural to hold back, fear, and fear can often be masked behind words like humble or modest, fear of being judged. The fear of too much; responsibility, attention, effort, failure, success you name it. We aren’t all called to be kings and giant slayers, you might be called to be teacher, nurse, CEO, home executive, athlete, whatever it is are you showing up fully and confidently in your God given potential?
I used to be so focused on pleasing others and not rocking any boats that I was just showing up in ways that kept myself and everyone comfortable. God doesn’t promise a comfortable life, he promises a rewarding life if we will rise up and fulfill our potential. I came to crossroads with myself and I am now more afraid of showing up in heaven and God asking me "what did you do with my gifts and talents I blessed you with and with the gift of your one and precious life on earth?" I don’t want to limit God with my fear anymore, I am ok with disappointing, confusing and receiving judgment from people (btw that doesn’t mean I like it). I am stepping into my potential day by day. If I am going to rise I might as well shine, but not for my own glory but for His.
