📝 Reflection
Psalm 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my headset be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
The message my heart got this morning and evidently needs to get is that all I can do is my best. I am not the creator of the heavens and the earth, I don’t have the full story or picture, and I have limits. All God asks from us is faith and action motivated by that faith. It isn’t all up to us, we get to just show up and do our best. Our best on any given day may look different. Doing your best means showing up and using the resources you have at that moment; your energy, knowledge, experience, wisdom, time, energy, connections, ability, and possessions. Some days you might have very little energy, some days you might have very little money, some days you might have only a little time, but we always have a multitude of resources available to us. If you are feeling like you have none, take a deep breath, calm down and maybe sit with pen and paper and take inventory.
For those of us who are recovering perfectionists, we can really get caught up in analysis paralysis, trying to make the ‘right’ decision, outcome, creation etc…. What if you have yourself permission to just do something and do your best. You can even ask God into that situation ask for him to bless it and use it for His purposes. Maybe then you could relax and just enjoy or have peace in whatever you are struggling with right now. There is something unexplainable that happens when you allow yourself to just show up and do your best. Kids demonstrate this all the time, they build their confidence and ‘can do’ attitudes, which builds excitement and sense of adventure and of looking for new challenges. We adults can tend to forget this in the heaviness of life and responsibility.
This is part of what I sense in David, he was able to strike a balance of knowing his responsibility to show up and do his best but not getting too caught up in being perfect, because he knew God was. He took all of his imperfections and laid them at God’s feet and said, use me I’m yours. ‘My victory and my best is amplified and used for your Glory not mine’. I have a friend that often prays ‘lord put your super on my natural’, I love this. This is what David reminds us. We are the natural part of a super natural combination when we, submit and show up and do our best. David uses his natural senses to notice, remind himself of his place, and observe with honor that (19:1-4) “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak night after night they make him known. they speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.”
Friends if you are like me and your are getting caught up in a perfectionistic spirit that can create a sense of urgency and stuckness all at the same time. Can you take a deep breath with me right now…… in ….. out….. let your shoulders relax….. let the tension go…… and say this prayer with me today:
“I am going to do the best I can with what I have and where I am. God I know you are in control and will bless my sincere effort and heart and straighten my path if this is not what you would have me do or be. Please add your super to my natural, and give me peace and patience to be where I am and to allow the your plan for my life to unfold in your perfect timing. Thank you for this adventure of life. Amen”
