📝 Reflection
Proverbs 29:1
Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery.
Have you ever had times in your life when you ‘woke’ up and asked yourself ‘how did I get here’? I think most of us have. It is so easy to get off track. It happens ‘gradually and then suddenly’ as Earnest Hemingway is often quoted from his book The Sun Also Rises. This is the LAW of the compound effect at work for ‘good’ or for ‘bad’. Most of us who have asked ourselves this question can also, if we are honest, look back and say we had plenty of warnings along the way, we just stubbornly refused to heed them.
Planes, ships, trains and automobiles are great examples of this. None of them stay on a perfectly straight path, it is a constant process of course correction. Very easily if this process falters for too long the vehicle will get way off track. Gradually and then suddenly. This is kind of how the brain works and what we are learning in the study of habit science. Auto pilot is a powerful and beautiful thing when it is set to the ‘right’ destination. If you have a pilot or captain of a ship who isn’t monitoring this it things can get off track quickly and almost imperceptibly. Also the amount of power that it takes to get large vehicles going is a lot, conversely it also takes a lot to slow them down once they have momentum.
Habits are similar, once they are up and running and on autopilot it is hard to stop 🛑. I know I am preaching to the choir here! But we all also have our blindspots and areas of pride where we think ‘I’ve got this’. Even despite various warning signs either internally and or externally. You think you can push it a little further, you’ve got plenty of time, that won’t happen to me…etc… etc.. etc.. Right? Ironically, Hemingway who wrote this quote that is often used in this lesson, did suffer a ‘sudden’ and tragic ending despite many warning signs and trying to course correct when it was ‘too late’.
I fell in this rabbit hole myself despite lots of warnings and even watching my own father die at age 56 and my step father from the same process. We humans are a stubborn lot! So if you are in that place, the way out is to put your pride and ego down and accept the criticism that you are receiving either from your own body, mind, life consequences, and or loved ones and get back on track before you suddenly run out of ‘track’.
Even though it is harder to slow this train down at this speed, it is possible. It is also possible to turn things around if that is what is needed or to get back on the right path. The law works the same way in ‘reverse’. Gradually then suddenly. It is hard, hard, uncomfortable, hard, hard, uncomfortable, hard, hard… then suddenly one day it is easy. Stick with it and trust the process - because it isn’t just a process it is a law of nature! You are not so special that laws don’t apply to you ‘good’ or ‘bad’!
I am a good example. I woke up one day realizing that it seemed impossible to not have a glass or three of Chardonnay every day. It happened exactly this way! I woke up 50 lbs heavier one day, same thing, I gradually got used to a size 6, then an 8, then a 10 and then… I was an athlete with a fit body then suddenly… I have a ‘muffin top’ and jiggly arms, I am feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and way off course. Gradually then suddenly.
I have worked so hard for several years now and I haven’t had any alcohol in over 3.5 years and it is easy now. You couldn’t pay me to have a glass of wine or anything! I am down nearly 20lbs, I am a coach now helping others, I have recommitted to my real estate business, I am halfway through reading the entire bible cover to cover this year. I have probably at least 150 pages of writings done, I have stronger legs from walking everyday..
Slowly, slowly and then suddenly it happens, you are changed, course corrected. You too, you didn’t get her overnight, you aren’t going to get ‘out’ overnight! Life is a long game!
BUT never get prideful, me telling of my ‘successes’ now is not prideful. I have been humbled and I respect my brain and its power for good or bad! I understand that I have to put guardrails and systems in place to stay on course. I still have lot of work to do and changes to make. But I have evidence now that it is possible if I am willing to keep climbing. One of my other favorite quotes is “it doesn’t get easier, you just get stronger” - I would also add wiser.
