📝 Reflection
1 Kings 7: 41-43
“In the future, foreigners who do not belong to your people Israel will hear of you. They will come from distant lands because of your name, for they will hear of your great name and strong hand and powerful arm. And when they pray toward this Temple, then hear from heaven where you live, and grant what they ask of you. In this way, all the people of the earth will come to know and fear you, just as your own people of Israel do. They, too, will know that this Temple I have built honors your name.”
I just had to pause and take a deep breath when I read these verses. I felt grateful, glad and hopeful. God is for everyone. Solomon ‘got’ the bigger picture and vision of what God was up to. We get a glimpse of the good news here, that all the people of the earth will come to know and fear God. It took 20 years for Solomon to build the temple. It must have been quite a sight to behold. Grandness and beauty and only the finest materials everywhere you look. Being a raised a protestant this seems a little grandiose to me, but then Solomon demonstrates his understanding and reverence by saying in verse 27 “But will God really live on earth? Why, even the highest heavens cannot contain you. How much less this Temple I have built!”
Eventually we learn that not only will God live on earth, but he will live in each one of us that invites him in! The Old Testament is sometimes very hard to read and understand with our modern experience of life. I am not gonna lie, I don’t fully understand sacrificing animals as offerings and all of the violence, war and bloodshed. But then I get to a beautiful prayer like this and I am reminded that I don’t have to understand. I can just trust and believe and have faith. If God was a god that I could understand fully, would he be God?
God is so patient and so merciful, but in order to be trusted he does have to follow through on his word and demonstrate his power. He says what He means and He means what He says. This landed on me this morning and was just so reassuring and hope giving. I can sometimes get so caught up in wanting to understand it all. I am so impatient. So for yesterday, today and for now, I am going to try to relax and and try to be like Solomon and just be obedient and faithful and patient. If he can take 20 years to build a Temple, surely I can be a little patient in what I am trying to accomplish especially when I am genuine in wanting to stay in God’s will, which includes his timing.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
I would love to know how this speaks to you? Could you use a little hope and faith? Do you need to be reminded that God is for you and to trust his timing and be patient?
