📝 Reflection
Isaiah 9: 1-2
Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.
The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.
Isaiah is giving a great prophecy of the hope of Jesus that is coming in the future. But first there is a lot of work to do and a journey that has to be made to get there. God is asking the people once again to return to Him and trust in His ways and instructions, and he is also warning those that don’t about what will happen. Imagery of The Lord of the Rings came to mind of the journey that Frodo and Samwise must take. The hope that is on the horizon is what drives, guides and propels them on this journey. The journey though is fraught with peril, danger, violence, and uncertainty. The hope on the horizon is worth taking this risky adventure though. As I think of our human journey within, metaphorically it can be quite similar.
My husband came home from the butcher shop yesterday with 🦴 bones for our dogs. Even though they live the sheltered and pampered lives of the modern house pet, they instinctively knew what to do with these bones. One immediately ran to the backyard and buried it, only to dig it up later and go to work on it. There is no choice or thinking here, they just do what they are driven and wired by instinct to do as the 🐕 that are. We were observing and marveling at this and observing God’s design in action. They immediately went from our docile best friend to the carnivorous hunters that they also are. No thought, no intention, no choice - just pure autopilot.
Humans are not this way, although we have this aspect of ourselves. We are so marvelously complex and the pinnacle of God’s creation in that we also have access to conscious choice. We are fully ‘animal’ and instinctive and we have the potential to be fully conscious with the ability to exercise free will and choice. One of those choices is to be fully conscious, or the executive portion of our brain to be in control and making the choices or the more ‘animal’ or survival, instinctive part of our brains to be running the show. Often times both are fighting for control, humans often try to describe this reality of the ‘war within’. It is like we have an inner knowing and we see this light or hope on the horizon of the ‘higher’ self running things, but it is hard. The survival instinct is so strong.
These chapters of Isaiah describe the coming hope, but first it is going to be hard and a lot of violence and war and a deconstruction of what is so that God can reconstruct and rebuild and be ready for what is coming. We have to go toward and journey and battle along the way as well. I see this as the journey from the survival brain being in control to learning how to be fully conscious and the executive brain being in control and head knowledge become heart knowing 💗.
