Proverbs 3: 5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
An acronym came to me in my quiet time this morning for GOD - Guidance on demand. Now before you call me a heretic of accuse me of blaspheming, I am not by any means thinking of him as a genie in a bottle who just grants all of our desires. Quite the opposite in fact, he often guides, sends us in directions and asks us to do things we don’t want to do. When we do it anyway and follow his guidance things actually work out better for us. This is wisdom, it is wise to trust God and his ways and not depend on our own understanding.
As I am writing this, spring is blooming and the birds are chirping and singing and busy flying around, building their nests and doing all the things that their internal God designed guidance systems are instructing them to do. They don’t have the ‘burden’ of free will, overthinking and questioning that we are blessed with. Nature and all of the creatures follow and trust their guidance systems, but we humans who sit at the top of the food chain, and are God’s crowing jewel of creation and made in His image are the ones that have trouble ‘trusting’ our God given guidance system.
I titled today’s reflection Guidance On Demand, in our modern vernacular ‘on demand’ doesn’t me we are literally demanding, it is understood to mean that things are ‘available’ on demand. Just wanted to pause and make sure we are on the same page before we move forward. I think this is an important distinction because if we focus on the ‘demand’ part, we can get confused and mistakenly think of God as a genie, but if we focus on availability and having access to wisdom at any time, that is an entirely different concept. The other analogy that came to me this morning was the GPS systems that we have on our phones and in some of our cars. When we have it programmed for a destination we will get clear guidance on demand, turn by turn directions, re-routing based on traffic patterns etc. What we don’t do is set a destination and then just look at it just once think that we have ‘got it’ and committed to memory and go off on our merry way and then get angry when we find ourselves lost. But yet, that is kind of how we treat God, our prayer life and our own internal gps and intuition that is God whispering to us… ‘go this way’, ‘turn here’, ‘call so and so’, ‘say I love you’, ‘give a hug’, ‘help some in need immediately if you are able and the opportunity presents itself’, ‘don’t delay’, ‘take this new job’, ‘wrong turn go back this way’, ‘slow down’, ‘speed up’, ‘move’, ‘stop….’
I mean we can trust technology and the fact that directions just appear to us out of nowhere because we typed or even spoke an address, and we even get annoyed when our signal is slow and it doesn’t pop up fast enough, but we have trouble believing that the God of the universe that created it all can speak to us through our own thoughts, other people or circumstances. We can believe in ‘co-indcidences’, serendipity, the power of ‘manifesting’ but no it can’t be God. That is too far fetched and ‘woo-woo’ or strange. It is really interesting. I used to also be skeptical, so no judgement here. I was also skeptical because I knew that what God wanted from me and his guidance took me away from my comfort zone and what I wanted in the moment. Which was usually a nap or a glass of wine and checking out in front of Netflix at the end of a long stressful day of resisting his guidance🤦♀️🤣.
Here is another thing I would do, if I thought I heard what I thought was God’s guidance, then it usually would also conflict with what I wanted, so then I might check in with a few of my people and of course their desires might be even different, so then I would try to satisfy them and everyone else and divide myself up and my time and feel scattered and exhausted. That is analogous to when you turn on your GPS and it gives you the different options available for the route depending on if you want to avoid interstates, toll roads, traffic etc.. - and I couldn’t decide so I would invent my own way based on a compilation of all the ways and then surprised when I would end up off course, lost, afraid, confused and exhausted. 😩 And then still nap and have chardonnay and just forget it all until the next day… and endless ground hog day that is symptom of the disease to please.
Right now I can hear the Fleetwood Mac song ‘You can go your own way’ is playing in my mind 🎶. I think God could easily be heard singing the lyrics to us ‘If I could maybe I’d give you my world, how can I when you won’t take it from me…. You can go your own way…🎼.

What guidance are you trusting, how is it working for you? Could it be possible that God has been guiding you all along, but you haven’t trusted or given Him the credit? Is it possible that if birds and animals know what to do, follow and trust their guidance on demand systems that we might have an even better guidance available and on demand for us and our lives? What if…What if, not only is it possible but that all you have to do is just pay attention, and let go of your own way and join God in the journey and adventure that he has waiting for you.
