📝 Reflection
Judges 2: 2-3
“For your part, you were not to make any covenants with the people living in this land; instead, you were to destroy their altars. But you disobeyed my command. Why did you do this? So now I declare that I will no longer drive out the people living in your land. They will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a constant temptation to you.”
Ok, before you read I want you to take a deep breath and get comfortable in your seat. You may be personally confronted in a good but uncomfortable way like I was this morning. In Christianese - we call this being ‘convicted’. I had no clear idea what message God was trying to get to me this morning as I was beginning the book of Judges until I started verbally processing, as I do every morning prior to writing on my live facebook videos. It was really interesting to have to start talking and sharing while not know what was coming! As I started talking it became more clear and it was probably something I was resisting seeing - God called me out on the spot and publicly! Oh boy! As I am writing I am still squirming in my seat!
If there was a land or territory called “Good Enough” - this would have been my allotted land. I am the ‘queen’ 👸of ‘Good Enough’. Prior to five years ago, I think these words could be put on my tomb stone - this was the guiding principle of my life - it is good enough! Now don’t get me wrong. Sometimes and with something’s good enough really is good enough. I really do believe in the principle of progress over perfection. Perfectionism is of the enemy and is a block and trap. What I am talking about here is more of an attitude and an aspect of commitment. Striving for excellence doesn’t require perfection, commitment doesn’t require perfection. But for the recovering closet perfectionists out there like me, hiding behind the ‘good enough’ allows for self deceit. Underneath this is really a fear of failure and/or even a fear of success. The land of good enough feels safer to many of us, because it doesn’t require our full commitment either, right?!?
To be fully committed to something is to expose yourself, it is vulnerable and risky. It requires you maybe to be new at something, or possibly not the ‘best’ at something, to be of a growth mindset vs. fixed as Carol Dweck puts it. It also allows ‘seemingly’ small sins to creep in, if we don’t fully commit to working on an area of our life. If you find yourself having thoughts and or saying things like ‘what’s the harm?’, ‘I’m too tired’, ‘it’s too hard’, ‘I don’t have the time’, ‘it’s only a little’, “I deserve it’, ‘that might make so&so mad’…. I could go on and on, because I have and did for now 40+years! First of all if you have to use sayings like this - you already know it isn’t the best choice for you right? These are ‘rational-lies’.
This is exactly what the Israelites did- they conquered most of the land and they said to each other ‘it’s good enough!, right?’ Yep! God will be happy with this, we mostly conquered the land. There is such a small amount left, what harm can it do let these people stay. We can use some of them as slaves and just let the rest stay. Good enough! As we dive into the book of Judges God will clearly demonstrate and show us why having a ‘good enough’ attitude towards our relationship with Him is NOT good enough! We will have thorns in our sides and be constantly tempted and struggle. This is also what many of us try to do with our relationship with our bad habits like over-drinking, over eating, over-tving, over-numbing etc.. We try to let just ‘a little’ remain thinking we can just ‘manage’ it. And sometimes maybe we can for awhile….
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
If you are also in ‘management’ relationship with a habit in your life, some might call this moderation, and maybe you have had some success, but you can’t quite ‘conquer’ it. You might ask your self about your level of commitment. The difference between 99% and 100% commitment is HUGE - that 1% is everything!
