Day 77 - Getting The Job Done

📝 Reflection

 Esther 8: 15-17

Then Mordecai left the king’s presence, wearing the royal robe of blue and white, the great crown of gold, and an outer cloak of fine linen and purple. And the people of Susa celebrated the new decree. The Jews were filled with joy and gladness and were honored everywhere. In every province and city, wherever the king’s decree arrived, the Jews rejoiced and had a great celebration and declared a public festival and holiday. And many of the people of the land became Jews themselves, for they feared what the Jews might do to them.

Esther part two…

Well as we learned from the first part of Esther they accomplished a lot and crossed a major hurtle, Haman received justice ironically by his own evil scheme he had devised to kill Mordecai, being impaled on a 75 foot pole. The king even gifts Queen Esther with Haman’s property. But, it is not quite time to celebrate yet, the decree that Haman had put into place that would have the Jews be annihilated on March 16, a date which had been chosen by Haman by casting lots (purim), was still in effect. This day was fast approaching and they still had to figure out how to deal with this looming catastrophe. So Esther pleads with the king to reverse the decree. King Xerxes says that it isn’t possible ‘whatever has already been written in the king’s name and sealed with his signet ring can never be revoked’. But then he says, here is what I can do, I will authorize Mordecai to write a new decree that will allow the Jews to unite and use any means necessary to defend themselves and also take the property of anyone they kill.

So Mordecai has the decree written and he has also been given the king’s signet ring, the royal robes and horses so he can swiftly deliver this new decree throughout the land.  The Jewish people are so excited and others in the land also seem to be excited and also concerned for their own safety and place their bets on the Jews and decide to become Jews themselves. The day arrives and by this time Mordecai has risen to great prominence, respect and power. On the appointed day the Jews annihilate their enemies and take their land but did not plunder it. They killed over 75,000 of their enemies. Now it is time to celebrate. Mordecai is now Prime Minister and Queen Esther declares that an annual festival be held in honor and remembrance of their victory, called the Festival of Purim and it is still celebrated to this day.

Fun fact, interestingly enough the Festival is usually mid March, this year (2022) it is the 16-18th, I am writing this on March 18th, 2022. While we in the western and Christian world celebrated St. Patricks day yesterday, the Jewish people were celebrating the Festival of Purim. So the moral of the story and to continue from yesterdays theme of ‘standing for what you believe’… standing up for what you believe in takes courage, conviction and persistance. It is hard work and it is a good start, but usually there is more work to be done. Some of us, myself included 🙋‍♀️, can feel so accomplished by the standing up and getting started leg of the journey that we can tire out and forget to finish the race. Many larger goals in order to be achieved have to be broken down into smaller goals. We can feel so accomplished having achieved one or more of the goals that we don’t get THE bigger job done. I think Esther and Mordecai, could have done that, they could have looked a each other after the king said, ‘sorry can’t reverse my decree’, and said, ‘well we did our best, we tried.., at least we got justice and Haman is dead, maybe that will discredit the decree and we can still somehow survive….’ .

No, they problem solved and got the job done, they strategized and outlined their next goals and the next phase of their plan and executed it, no pun intended! They even had unexpected success, they were so focused they encouraged recruited new members to their ‘team’. The not only saved their people, the reignited their pride in the nationality, revived their faith and increased their Jewish family.

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

Have you had great success, but maybe still have more to accomplish in your larger goals an aspirations? How can you be encouraged by Mordecai and Esther to rise and shine (😉) for such a time as this and get the job done?!
