📝 Reflection
Proverbs 12: 3
(NLT) Wickedness never brings stability, but the godly have deep roots.
(NIV & ESV) No one can be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted
So this verse caught my attention because of the words stability and established depending on the translation you read. I have been searching for stability ‘out there’ for my whole life. Growing up constantly on the move (like a fugitive on the run) and always the new kid in school and at home with parents who were always fighting, I didn’t have a lot of stability, or at least ‘good’ stability. I always had this feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop, having the rug pulled out from under me etc… As a protective measure it is no wonder that I put up some walls around me as an adult. Not letting people get too close or letting myself get too attached because there is going to be a change coming and I don’t want it to hurt too much.
What is one of the first questions you ask when you meet someone? “Where are you from?” I dread this question, because I don’t have an answer. I have learned to ‘craft’ one, often also asking a question in return, you want the long version or the short version? There are many things that establish an identity and it is made up of things that are stable in your life, one for most people is a ‘home town’ and/or family of origin. Those that don’t have this in our formative years often find ourselves struggling and searching for belonging. Ironically, if your nervous system is wired to be on the move - then this actually becomes established in your identity. You are searching for a home, but yet you find home being ‘on the move’ and searching.
This might not be your particular struggle. Maybe you did grow up with stability as far as location and family. But your community and family role modeled negative patterns and beliefs, and you do have stability, but what is established is not godly? There for you may also not feel like you have deep roots that are producing good fruit in your life- christianese for success.
Stable means fixed, firmly established, steady in purpose and unchanging. So it can be ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Establish means to make firm or stable, introduces and cause to grow and multiply, bring into existence, put on a firm basis, put into a favorable position, gain full recognition or acceptance of, to put beyond doubt. So things that are established and stable can be for our good or not. We have a lot of established beliefs, systems, traditions that get passed down generationally that are deep rooted, but are like pervasive weeds that choke out goodness.
What Proverbs is consistently telling us is that eventually the established negative patterns and ways of being lead to destruction and these destructive ways can be passed down generationally, but always with the same outcome - destruction. Having worked in the prison system, I know statistically this is true. But I also know that one person who decides to change can turn the tide generationally also. I have witnessed it and it is powerful and inspiring. It is a decision to establish your self in the Lord and find stability in whose you are and then change ones ways, beliefs are demonstrated and acted upon. That is why many of us feel divided, we have conflicting beliefs and actions.
It has taken me a long time to establish some stability for and within myself despite witnessing it in others. As is often the case, the answer is right in front of us or within in us, but we ‘can’t see the forest for the trees’. I have been stubbornly searching, as I was role modeled, endlessly searching ‘out there’. One of my mentors and coaches Jenn Kautsch introduced me to a phrase you might have heard, but it was new to me and a game changer ‘wherever you go there you are’. So my tendency to look out there for answers is the same thing we all do, but guess what if you don’t change from within all you do is relocate the problem. 💡This was a lightbulb moment for me - but on a dimmer switch, but none the less the lights started to come on! Finally I began to understand the problem was established within me and the answer would also have to be the same. I would have to find a ‘stable’ source of stability. For me this is God. So I intentionally set out on a journey to be @peace and @home where ever I was. I also opened my bible and dedicated myself to reading and meditating on God’s word daily and sharing these my reflections in these daily rise and shine videos and writings.
My life is transforming; my heart, my body, my nervous system, my spirit, and my mind are transforming day by day. The word is becoming flesh and I am finding peace and a feeling of belonging within myself. Not because of who I am but because of whose I am and getting to know Him directly. There is nothing special about me, that is not also special about you. The fact that we exist and we have a creator who wants to us to know him and be devoted to Him intimately is nothing short of humbling and amazing. I can think of no better way now to spend my time and energy, the ROI is unquantifiable.
BTW, I could not have this understanding, relationship or this clarity without putting down the wine glass first. Alcohol messes with your mind, body and spirit and is not compatible with this type of relationship. It creates or establishes instability in the mind, body and spirits. Another definition of stable is: not subject to insecurity or emotional illness, sane, rational. Think about it.
