📝 Reflection
Psalm 107: 2
Has the Lord redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.
We all can use some encouragement am I right? I know we are tempted to only show our good side, the ‘I figured it out’ side, the successful part of our lives, ‘the after’ photo. These things are important for sure and we need to celebrate our victories. One of the best ways we can truly encourage others though is to show and talk about our ‘before’ selves. Our real, honest and authentic before selves, not just the ‘white washed’ curated version. Honesty with our struggles and our victories are what encourage others. This gives others hope and a trust and belief that there really is hope from this seemingly hopeless and impossible place.
The word encourage is the root word from the French meaning literally- in courage. Sometimes to be in courage we have to borrow and lend courage to each other through our real life examples. It doesn’t feel comfortable I know to be vulnerable and share our ‘before’ stories, but this is what we all need from each other. We need to know we aren’t alone and that other people have experienced and been where we are and they have found a way out or to the other side of what ever it is we are struggling with!
I would encourage you to speak as publicly as you are comfortable with, but regardless start speaking, don’t keep it to yourself and don’t allow others to mistakenly believe that you have it all together. If you are human, you don’t, and if you think you do then you really need some encouragement yourself! The interesting thing about encouraging others is that we also are continually encouraging ourselves again, by retelling and reminding ourselves of how far we have come. It can also encourage us to keep going, don’t just stop and having one level of success. Keep going and growing.
For those of you that are Christ followers make sure you are giving glory to God in the process of encouraging, don’t take all of the credit for yourself! You had help! For those of you that are not sure if you believe there is a God, maybe consider and be open that you are also getting help! I hear so often how people believe that they received encouragement from someone and it was divinely orchestrated. I believe this is so true. ‘When the student is ready the teacher appears’, because God literally knows when you are ready and he sends someone or something to encourage you! Maybe just maybe you can be the teacher that someone is seeking and the messenger of hope and in return you will also be encouraged. Encouragement is a win! Win! Win! Win!!!!
