2 Timothy 1: 5-7, 13
“I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus.”
Many believe this was Paul’s final letter before he died and he was aware that it might be. He was very purposeful in the way he led and he followed the pattern of Jesus. He is imploring Timothy to continue the pattern set by him as well as that set by his Grandmother and Mother.
God did not and does not gives a spirt of fear and timidity. We do that to ourselves. If we are not careful we pass this pattern on to others. So as you think about want pattern you are passing on, is it fear or power? Love or discord? Indulgence or self discipline? Indulgence when closely examined is often motivated by fear, fear that there isn’t enough of something. Not enough resources, not enough time, or not enough opportunity.
Perfect love casts out fear, which then enables us to exercise more self discipline. We want want is best for ourselves and others in the long run. We understand there is always enough. Being content with what we have and knowing and trusting that our needs will be met. We can be free to love when we aren’t driven by fear. This is power and it is a powerful pattern to pass on and to seek to mimic.
Great advice to hold onto the pattern of wholesome teachings and teachers when we find them. Patterns that are shaped by faith and love so that they can fan the flame of those who are called to become teachers, who have that spiritual gift. We all are teachers whether we wear that label or not, but some have a special calling and we should pour into them with positive patterns, so that they can pour it back out and bless others.
God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity - I just love that! If you have fear and timidity it is not of God! God gives a spirit of power, love and self discipline! Wow I needed this message today. There is so much fear swirly all around us, it is easy to latch onto and think that it is who we are who we should be. Even those of us who are believers, we keep ourselves fearful and small in God’s name and we piously call it things like modesty and humility. When it is really just being afraid of what other’s might think.
