📝 Reflection

 Isaiah 41: 1

“Listen in silence before me, you lands beyond the sea. Bring your strongest arguments. Come now and speak. The court is ready for your case.”

Before a case goes to court and before a judgment or decision can be made, due diligence needs to take place. Many of us though don’t engage very well or at all with this part of the decision making process. Some of us can over do it and spend so much time in this process that we don't move on to the decision phase. Although, even a ‘non’ decision is a decision.

Due diligence is an important and necessary part of a wise decision making. We have all seen movies and court room dramas where the lawyer is meeting with their client for the first time and the lawyer tells their defendant that they need to tell them everything. They mean everything, they want complete and total honesty, no stone left unturned, no truth whitewashed, they want it all. The good, the bad and the ugly. There is nothing worse than getting blindsided in court after the fact. They can’t defend or deal with what they don’t know.

Wise people do this with themselves as well. Fools skip this, or gloss over, maybe ignore or leave out details, look at things with ‘rose’ colored glasses.  You can’t change what you are not willing to see and admit!! This is painful and courageous work because the ego wants desperately to defend and protect itself at all costs. Trust me, I was a PRO at this!! It kept me on a hamster wheel of frustration, of wanting to be more, but keeping myself in stuck patterns of behavior and not willing to be honest and humble with myself about myself!

One of the professional hats that I also wear is as a Realtor. One of the first things I do is ask for my sellers is to fill out a sellers disclosure form. I advise them to err on the side over disclosure, they don’t want the sale of their house to fall through because of their own lack of honesty. On the purchase side, it is the first things the buyers need to look at, but in case a legal issue comes up they can’t rely upon it, they are also encouraged to get their own inspection of the house to verify what the seller has told them is true and to also uncover any other potential issues that the seller may not be aware of. When involved in a major purchase like this, all parties involved need to do their due diligence, they need all of the facts to make a wise decision. Conversely a buyer has to submit proof of their ability to purchase the home and sellers have to do their due diligence to make sure it is true etc…

Many of us don’t make this kind of effort in our own lives though. Some of the most common excuses are not having enough time, money, fear of disapproval or judgement from others. When I hear this even from myself, it is almost never really about time, money or fear. It is a matter of priority. If something is a priority, we find the time, money, willingness and courage.

There is no judgement here, often it is a process and you have to start somewhere. The due diligence process is that starting place. We lay all our cards on the table. We see what we have to work with, where we are, who we are with, what is going on and then prioritize and strategize and build our case and move with honesty and integrity towards who we not only who we want to be and who we are willing to do and be to get there. Progress over perfection involves honesty.

BTW, the definition of diligence is - steady, earnest, and energetic effort: devoted and painstaking work and application to accomplish and undertaking.

Ps. I think I would have made a great lawyer, don’t you?  Maybe if had I done my own due diligence as a younger version of me… but who knows anything is possible with diligence 😜 in due time. Where ever God leads I will follow💖
