📝 Reflection
Mark 16: 7
Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.”
The book of Mark as I understand it is a book written by John Mark a contemporary of Paul but is written from the sermons and first hand account of Peter. I love that Peter names himself in this verse. The last time we saw Peter he was hanging his head in shame over his realization that he had denied knowing Jesus three times just as Jesus had predicted. Jesus then was crucified and Mary and Salome go the tomb to anoint the body, but It is not there. Instead there is a young man inside the tomb that is telling them to go tell the disciples including Peter that Jesus is not there! This is such good news not just for Peter for us too!
Our moments of shame, doubt, fear, failure, pain, regret, disappointment are just that just moments. There is always hope, there is always a chance for redemption and saving grace. We can be down but being out is a choice. Peter is the ultimate comeback kid! I also love that he refers to himself as Peter, not Simon. His shame solidified his faith into the rock that it needed to be, to build the church upon. I think Jesus knew exactly what he was doing when he chose Peter. He chose him not just inspite of his failure but because of it! He used it as only God can!
He does the same for us! This is such good news! When you saw this title you probably thought I was going to talk about the obvious, Jesus’s resurrection. There was more than one resurrection that happened on that day. There is also resurrection power for us too! Our weaknesses don’t have to keep us down. When we invite the super onto our natural just watch what God will do with that type of ‘weakness’ and humility! When we are weak is when he is strong and when his strength shines through the brightest. This is what inspires us all!
I think God is strategic enough too, that he knew Peter would save himself in the face of persecution. He needed him to be alive to start the church. His plan was complex and multipurpose. His failure to claim knowing Jesus was part of God’s plan and for choosing him to build the church on. He needed him to survive and he needed him to fail in his own strength. So maybe this is also meant to encourage us, maybe our mistakes, screw ups are exactly what needs to happen for us too! I know my own failures of people pleasing, over drinking and over eating are exactly what I needed to wake up. I had to fall asleep there for awhile before I knew what it felt like to be fully awake. I knew I had a choice to stay down or rise up and get myself out! With God’s grace, mercy and help I am more grateful and appreciative of this gift of life than I could have been had I not taken it for granted for awhile there. You have the same opportunity. You might be down, but you don’t have to be out! Rise up to what God has in store for you too!
