📝 Reflection
Proverbs 26:4-5
Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him.
Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes.
What the heck?? Don’t, but do, …so which is it? What are these verses really telling us? In the words of my parents, I can remember them telling me ‘don’t stoop down to their level, it makes you just as bad’. I think this is similar. You do need to answer as vs. 5 says, BUT you need to have self control and not allow yourself to get tempted to become provoked, match their energy, get angry etc… . This is not easy depending on the circumstance.
Anyone who is a parent or has ever watched a parent or has been in the presence of a three year old throwing a tantrum can understand. I think this is a good metaphor. Another good one in our modern day is getting ‘sucked’ into arguments on line with ‘trolls’ or those on extreme ends of controversial issues. Pick what ever resonates with you to understand.
Back also to the self- we do this to ourselves. We have an inner ‘toddler’ that wants what it wants and we often give in just to shut that voice up. Right? We need to help ourselves with our own wisdom by pre-deciding, being prepared and pre planning. Many of us though live busy, hectic, and ‘fly by the seat of our pants’ lives and then ‘hope’ that we will have wisdom or make good choices in all the right moments as they happen.
Ever heard the quote “hope is not a strategy, and yet many of us live our day to day lives like this and then wonder how we get ‘sucked’ into situations, circumstances, foolishness, arguments etc.. It is worth taking the time to think about this. Know what you stand for and be prepared in the moment, toddlers, trolls and other challenging people and situations can throw you off your game quicker that you can blink if not!
The other thing to consider is that others are always watching, which means that you are always role modeling and representing your values and what you stand for. Are you a good representative in those moments when you ‘stoop’ down to someone else’s level?
