📝 Reflection
Proverbs 31:20
She extends a helping hand to the poor and opens her arms to the needy.
Ok most of us have heard of the proverbial 🤣Proverbs 31 woman, ‘A Wife of Noble Character’ and think of this as the measuring stick of the ‘ideal’ woman and wife. I can’t tell you how many times I have read this chapter, participated in bible studies, heck I even had this memorized at one point. One thing I have not done until today is sat and meditated on it and asked God to speak directly to me through it. Be careful what you ask for… you just might get it.
I have to pause and tell you, I don’t love being this vulnerable right now. It is pretty awful, but I know it is and will continue to yield awesomeness. I also know I am not alone, and what I am sharing about is resonating with you or it describes someone you know. Back to the chapter and the reason I selected the above verse. This is ONE verse out of 21 that is about volunteering and giving to the poor and needy. The other 20 verses are about taking care of her own responsibilities first and then fruit of that labor.
The other message that is often missed in our (or my) understanding of this chapter is that she was a team leader - she didn’t do everything by herself. She had a team- she had servants, workers, children. She was a leader, partner, organizer and a business woman. Often we women take this description way too literally and we think we are supposed to be doing everything ourselves and also pouring ourselves out in service to others.
Many of us, I know I am not alone, got the message that goodness equaled running around making sure everyone’s needs and desires were met, and then if we had some time and energy left over then we could pay attention to our own needs. I am a natural born encourager, helper, servant oriented type and the message I got was that the ideal woman does everything and she even finds time to be ‘hot’ too! That is reinforced by our marketing, social media, etc.. It is exhausting. Many of us are left thinking that a manicure or trip to the spa once in a while is self care, or going to the grocery or the bathroom by ourselves is self care. Guys, I don’t mean to leave you out on this one, I know there are those of you in the same boat.
I am not going to go into a whole essay on self care that is for another day. The point is this ‘woman’ is ideal because she understood the right order of things. She served from a place of overflow and was truly of service by living a life by example and role modeling what is not only possible but what happens when you do things in the right order. She wasn’t just lucky or somehow ‘special’, she was following the principles and law of the harvest, and reaping the rewards. I am not so special and you are not so special that we can’t also live life this way. With fear of the Lord, discipline, understanding and doing; we will be greatly praised and rewarded and our life will speak for itself.
Well the truth is our life does speak for itself regardless - what is yours saying?
This is not to cast any blame or shame, we can’t do better if we don’t know better and if we have never been taught these things or had role models. I am right there with you. My life was speaking exhaustion, burnout, unhealthy coping habits, overwhelm, anxiety….
I decided to push the pause button on my life and decided to find some role models and learn a different way. And slowly but surely, day by day, choice by choice, I am learning, doing and becoming something new. Simultaneously I have had to unlearn, undo, and un-become. An awful process leading to awesome rewards, by the grace and mercy of God. God is my life coach, with His help I am rising and shining for His Glory. A humbling and hopeful journey, one that you can go on for yourself.
