📝 Reflection
Exodus 17: 3-6
'But tormented by thirst, they continued to argue with Moses. “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Are you trying to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?” Then Moses cried out to the Lord , “What should I do with these people? They are ready to stone me!” The Lord said to Moses, “Walk out in front of the people. Take your staff, the one you used when you struck the water of the Nile, and call some of the elders of Israel to join you. I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.” So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on. '
This struggle of this human life is real! There is a real tension within, between our lower brain (survival/flesh) and our higher brain (spirit/consciousness).
Both are necessary and useful. The higher brain needs to be ‘driving the 🚌’. But our drive to survive is so strong that the lower brain often takes over and remains in the drivers seat. We can often see the truth of this and results of this in our daily lives through broken relationships, in healthy relationships with substances and food etc…
As I am continue reading on in Exodus we can see this struggle play out in the Israelites as the sing 🎵 songs of praise to God for rescuing them and then the very next day wishing they were back in slavery once more because they were thirsty and needed water (survival brain/ego). Totally understandable, I relate so much to these forgetful people who are affected by their immediate circumstances and concerned for their very survival.
God heard their cries and provided water from a rock 🪨. He understood too, because he created them/us. Restoring not only their bodies through water but also their spirits (higher mind).
We need desire- it helps us stay alive but when it is in the drivers seat alone it can drain us if our spirit which is vital to live fully as we are designed in the ‘imago dei’.
*note: There are a couple of great books if you want to explore more, The Biology of Desire by by Mark Lewis & The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton.
