📝 Reflection
Revelation 20: 1-3, 7-9, 13-15
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit and a heavy chain in his hand. He seized the dragon—that old serpent, who is the devil, Satan—and bound him in chains for a thousand years. The angel threw him into the bottomless pit, which he then shut and locked so Satan could not deceive the nations anymore until the thousand years were finished. Afterward he must be released for a little while. '
'When the thousand years come to an end, Satan will be let out of his prison. He will go out to deceive the nations—called Gog and Magog—in every corner of the earth. He will gather them together for battle—a mighty army, as numberless as sand along the seashore. And I saw them as they went up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded God’s people and the beloved city. But fire from heaven came down on the attacking armies and consumed them. '
‘The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.'
This is a chapter about perseverance and keeping the faith! Don’t give up! Those were the words that kept coming to me in my quiet time. God’s timing is not our timing. He is God, he is working things out on the universal cosmic stage not just at our individual human level. When life and things we get worked up about in perspective, it really helps to remember this. We are insignificant and yet we are supremely significant! Pretty amazing that the creator of the universe does care about us so deeply, in fact he loves us. This is something to hang on to in the times when it seems like the weight of the world is bearing down on you.
Here in this chapter John is being brought through a stage in the vision where an angel is throwing Satan into a pit for a thousand years, only to be allowed to come out of the pit to wage war again. There is an epic battle with numberless armies as vast as the sands along the seashore. Armies of Gog and Magog. I feel like I am reading Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia or some other epic adventure novel. In the final show down, all of Satans armies and even death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. 🗡️ Those whose name were in the Book of Life were saved from this fate.
You and I are in that book. Our names are written there, isn’t that amazing to think about? Meditate on this, the only way to not be in that book is to give up. There is no failing. There is only learning. The only time we fail is when we completely quit and give into the darkness. Even then, it is not too late, open your heart and let the light back in, get up and get back to it! We are human, God doesn’t not expect perfection, nor even want it. That leaves no room or need for him.
If you have breath in your lungs, you have hope and a future. But you have to keep showing up. He will not do it for you! To quote Dr. Suess “Oh the places you’ll go, you have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose!” Choose your direction wisely. The way of love, grace, honor and mercy which will produce joy, peace, kindness, gentleness, goodness, humbleness, faithfulness and self control.
If you are like me and you had things kind of turned around and backwards. Your heart was in the right place, and your intentions were good, but your compass was off. Don’t give up, it’s not too late! No matter how overwhelmed, hopeless, ashamed, hurt, angry, anxious, betrayed, or worthless you might feel, there is a book of life and your name is waiting to be written in it! You just have to choose to humble yourself and get to work! With man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible!
Our reality is shaped by the thoughts in our hearts and minds. There is always something to be grateful for! Always, always, always. When you can focus your mind on even what might seem like the smallest of things to be grateful for, you will have hope. Hope is like living water for the soul, it will refresh, renew, refocus and reenergize you! Try it. Next time you catch yourself in a negative thought pattern. Push the pause button and focus on just one thing you can be grateful for and why. Really feel it, don’t just haphazardly say, I am grateful for my dog or something random. BTW Dogs are not random, it is God spelled backward for a reason!
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
Close your eyes, think of someone, a beloved pet, something, a recent event or experience, nature, the miracle of being a human who is living, electricity… what ever comes to mind for you. Next see it in your minds eye, experience it, feel the joy and gratitude for it. Hold this for at least 10-30 seconds. Notice how your energy has shifted. You have moved from feeling constricted, closed off, maybe even heavy, low energy or charged with negative energy and now you are more open, lighter, maybe even happy and hopeful. You have reminded yourself that there is more to life than whatever has you caught in its grip right now. Which are actually just your own thoughts about what ever it is, rather than the thing itself.
Don’t be deceived by negative thoughts. They are only thoughts and thoughts can be changed. This is the amazing power of a conscious human being, that most of us never wake up to. Negative thinking is a habit, that is all, it is not who you are, you can change. Don’t give up! You can do it. Keep practicing, keep showing up, it is worth it!
