📝 Reflection
Revelation 15: 2-4, 5-8
“I saw before me what seemed to be a glass sea mixed with fire. And on it stood all the people who had been victorious over the beast and his statue and the number representing his name. They were all holding harps that God had given them. And they were singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb:
“Great and marvelous are your works,
O Lord God, the Almighty.
Just and true are your ways,
O King of the nations.
Who will not fear you, Lord,
and glorify your name?
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come and worship before you,
for your righteous deeds have been revealed.””
15: 5-8
“Then I looked and saw that the Temple in heaven, God’s Tabernacle, was thrown wide open. The seven angels who were holding the seven plagues came out of the Temple. They were clothed in spotless white linen with gold sashes across their chests. Then one of the four living beings handed each of the seven angels a gold bowl filled with the wrath of God, who lives forever and ever. The Temple was filled with smoke from God’s glory and power. No one could enter the Temple until the seven angels had completed pouring out the seven plagues.”
Many mornings this year as I have headed out to my local park which has a small lake, I have been blessed to personally and quite literally experience this vision. Many mornings the lake at sunrise 🌅 reflected in the lake looks like a sea of glass mixed with fire. I am sometimes so filled with gratitude my mind feels detached from my problems at least momentarily and I have so much peace. Inside I could feel as if I am standing on the lake and holding a harp and singing a song of awe filled wonder at what my senses get to feast on in those moments.
It is Christmas today as I am writing and I was caught up in this metaphor and of the holy smoke that is fills the temple. Holy smoke is a term that has its origin in the Bible and the practice of burning sacrifices and the holy smoke that emanates. Over the years it has worked it’s way into our common venacular. But it is a saying that conveys surprise happiness and excitement.
As I was further pondering smoke, it is the element of something once solid being broken down into tiny particles and then mixed with air. It makes what is normally unseen; air, become more visible by mixing with something that is the result of something real being burned by fire and converted into a new substance. This metaphorically is a lot like what God does with us, when we surrender and humble ourselves to his awesome reality. Our substance gets mixed with His to create something new.
He is more real than anything, and yet we are easily deceived by our senses and our logical brains. Let us throw open our hearts wide open and be filled with the Holy Spirit. He humbled himself and came to earth to show us the way. We can experience a peace that surpasses all understanding, when we willingly enter into His temple by realizing that we are His temple. Within us we have the capacity to live in a state of awe and wonder and feel like we are standing on a sea of glass mixed with fire living in harmony with God and nature. Letting our life be sacrificed and to be a like a fragrant holy smoke, die so that we may fully live.
Merry Christmas, 🎄! Treat yourself in the coming days by going to visit a nearby body of water at sunrise or sunset and experience this wonder for yourself. Be in the moment in harmony with your soul, with God’s soul, with nature. Go see a sea of glass mixed with fire, see it with new eyes, hear the sound of harps being played all around you by beautiful sounds of nature singing songs of praise. There is always always always something to be grateful for. Gratitude and joy throw the tabernacle of our heart wide open even when we feel like we are being plagued. We can transform our plagues into holy smoke with the attitude of our heart.
