📝 Reflection
Revelation 14: 18-20
'Then another angel, who had power to destroy with fire, came from the altar. He shouted to the angel with the sharp sickle, “Swing your sickle now to gather the clusters of grapes from the vines of the earth, for they are ripe for judgment.” So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and loaded the grapes into the great winepress of God’s wrath. The grapes were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress in a stream about 180 miles long and as high as a horse’s bridle.'
As we continue on with the book of Revelation it does’t disappoint with the dramatic story unfolding. As I was reading the last few verses of the chapter is struck me that this might have inspired the great novel by Steinbeck “The Grapes of Wrath”. This epic story has a lot of biblical themes in it of struggle, oppression, captivity, sacrifice, love and redemption.
There is also another famous work of art, a song that has this line in it; The Battle Hymn of the Republic. I was reading through the lyrics and this line really resonated with me: “In the beauty of the Lillies Christ was born across the sea, with a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me; As He died to make men Holy, let us die to make men free.”
As I am sitting here on Christmas Eve it is sweet that I was led to read these words in the poignant and powerful song. We are transfigured, or at least we can be, if we choose wisely. It is a voluntary process that we enter into. Many stay in the shallows of a remote story that took place eons ago, but the stories, visions, parables are as relevant today as they were when written.
We have the gift and the blessing of having a conscious awareness of our creator. Not only that but a connection to the mystery of it all. Many scoff and call it silly, but things are not always what they seem. The wise and those seeking wisdom wake up to this truth. Others who live only for this world and for themselves and get caught up in the ‘rat race’ will feel the pressing of their own consequences like being crushed like grapes in a winepress.
Don’t be fooled by what your eyes see and what your senses tell you. There is so much that we miss and misconstrue. “Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them!” (Rev 14:13) When you choose to die to God’s love and grace and humble yourself and grow in wisdom you will reap the rewards if your behavior lines up with your beliefs, which it always does. Wisdom holds hands only with humility. The lamb of God, who transfigures into a lion, a king, the King of all Kings, a name above all names. Who came to earth as a human baby born modestly by a young woman who knew there was more and humbly said yes.
