Day 356- Things are not always what they seem

📝 Reflection

Revelation 12: 1-3

'Then I witnessed in heaven an event of great significance. I saw a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant, and she cried out because of her labor pains and the agony of giving birth. Then I witnessed in heaven another significant event. I saw a large red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, with seven crowns on his heads. '

Holy Moly now the vision is getting even more interesting as if that was even possible. We pregnant ‘celestial’ woman and a seven headed dragon waiting to devour her baby. And that is only a simple introduction!  The symbolism in this vision clearly points to Jesus as the end of the chapter even names him: “And the dragon was angry at the woman and declared war against the rest of her children—all who keep God’s commandments and maintain their testimony for Jesus“

It is an epic vision of drama and a battle to protect this new born. This vision I think is meant to point to one thing and many things simultaneously. While this woman can clearly represent Mary, it can also represent Eve, Sarah, all women. The crown of twelve stars can represent the Nation of Israel and the twelve tribes. The dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns, can represent satan. The ten crowns might represent the ten lost tribes.

I can also see how the seven heads can represent the seven deadly sins. So much rich symbolism that can represent so many stories and concepts within the Bible simultaneously. The patter of three years shows up again. After Jesus was born we do know that King Herod was looking for him and even massacred many young infants hoping to kill him. Jesus was hidden away for the first few years of his life to protect him. HIs ministry was three years.

The mention of one third also happened again, the dragon swung his tail and wiped out a third of the stars. What does this pattern of destruction point to? A few things come to mind with this as well, maybe it is a reference to a part of our triune nature, maybe our life span, our life maturity, maybe sleep? Things are not always what they seem.

I think we are allowed to get enough of a glimpse to know that their is more. The human mind likes to have answers, to have things figured out, to have certainty and predictability. Yet we have this very mysterious aspect to ourselves, our world and the world beyond. It is so interesting to me that we can easily get so caught up in our day to day lives that we forget this.

Even more than this, we go around thinking that we ‘know’ what other people are thinking and feeling, what their intentions are, what they really mean when they say and do things. I am really practicing not doing this. I barely know what I am thinking and feeling at any given time, I can I dare have the hubris (fancy word for pride) to know what what others are thinking and feeling and then even hold them hostage with this?

Then we read epic books like the Bible that have mysterious visions like the book of Revelation in it and we realize that we are just a microscopic part of a larger, longer cosmic story that Is being played out. There are patterns at work, chemistry, biology, miracles and the mystery of consciousness and divinity. We are not that special and yet we are infinity special. There is a potentially a cosmic battle for our very souls. Our souls, when we can slow down enough to nourish them know that there is more, that things are not as they seem.

When we can be still and know, we can begin to see beyond ourselves. We all have the same temptations, the same struggles, the same journey in many ways. We are in this together we are learning that we need rules to help safe guard us, but that they are not the end game. We are to grow beyond them to grasp the larger truths of love, grace and selflessness. Maybe the ultimate truth is that there is no self to be less of or more of…

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

Well anyway, so much mystery, so little time. What are some things in your life that may not be what they seem? How can you zoom out and see things more clearly as you get your own ideas out of the way? Are there patterns in your life?
