Day 353- Natural Consequences and Your Attitude

📝 Reflection
Revelation 8: 1-2
'When the Lamb broke the seventh seal on the scroll, there was silence throughout heaven for about half an hour. I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and they were given seven trumpets. '
Well this is an interesting opening to the chapter. There was silence for about half an hour. After this silence we are told that incense is mixed with all the prayers into a bowl to help them make their way up to God. Another angel, not one of the seven then fills the bowl with fire and dumps it out and there is lighting, storms and an earthquake on earth. Next we are told there are seven (there is that pattern again) angels, four of which are start blowing their trumpets. As they each start blowing their trumpets we get scenes of destruction.
With the first angel there is one third of the earth set on fire and trees and vegetation are lost. The second angel blows it’s trumpet and a mountain of fire (volcano?) thrown into the sea and one third of all the sea life is destroyed and the water turn red with blood. Then the third angel blew its trumpet and a star of bitterness is cast to earth making the water bitter and one third of all humans are killed by the bitter water. Then the fourth angel blow it’s trumpet and the sun and moon go dark and one third of the day and night are both dark. The chapter closes as we are told that a single eagle flys across the sky crying ‘terror, terror, terror to all who belong to this world because of what will happen when the last three angels blow their trumpets” (very climatic segway…dunt…dunt…dunt…)
So we have four events of one thirds..interesting to take note of and a warning of what is coming next. As I started praying and asking for practical insight on this the notion of natural consequences that we have in our lives, just by being the imperfect humans that we are and living in community and relationships with other humans. We can certainly get ourselves into some pickles. Either they are natural consequences of our own behavior, other’s behavior, or just life happening on earth.
As our awareness of those consequences dawn on us and we start to wake up to the reality of them. We might find parts of our life on fire, see the blood in the water around us, it might be bitter to swallow this reality and it might then cause our outlook to darken. But all is not lost at this point there is still a lot of hope. Our attitude, our ownership, our hope and faith and what we do next will determine a lot.
The most important attitude of all though is humility. Are you willing to humble yourself and get to work or will your pride block you? Unfortunately the ego, fear and pride is strong and is what will be in the drivers seat for the majority of humans. Pride comes before the fall as we are warned repeatedly throughout scripture.
When the natural consequences are piling up all around you, what you choose to do next will be everything. Consequences tend to announce themselves quite loudly don’t they, almost like trumpets and eagles crying. Will you listen and choose love, humility and personal responsibility or roll the dice. It takes a lot of ‘heart’ work to clean up the messes of life and start living proactively vs. reactively. Which is why most of us don’t do it. I refused myself to take heed of the consequences of my own actions and how I was reacting to others actions and life circumstances. I let my ego, fear and pride be large and in charge for a long time until I just couldn’t take it anymore. It was starting to take a toll on my physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.
It has been the best decision I have ever made other than co-creating a family by marrying my husband and having two amazing humans be birthed through me. Walking with Christ in humility by faith and now in grace and love has been nothing short of transformational. I pray every day for help to be continually reminded by humility and grateful for the gift of life. To lose my life and my sense of ‘self’ so that I might gain it. To be wise in how I live now vs. so haphazardly and inviting into my life the natural consequences of that lifestyle.
I pray that for you as well. Slow down, for at least 30 minutes everyday to just get your spirit in line with the spirit of God. Slow down, get still, get quiet, get humble and get more life, more adventure, more time than you ever dreamed was possible. Don’t continue to let fear, pride and your ego keep your from the glory God has planned for you.
