Revelation 6: 1
“As I watched, the Lamb broke the first of the seven seals on the scroll. Then I heard one of the four living beings say with a voice like thunder, “Come!””
As we get further into John’s vision it gets more and more complex. Here in chapter six the Lamb begins to break the seals on the scroll. So I am going to do my best to give you an overview.
With the first four seals we are introduced to what are commonly referred to as the four horsemen of the apocalypse. First their is a white horse and ride that carry bow and wear a crown and are victorious in many battles. Second is the red horse and rider that carries a sword and is there to take peace from the earth with war and slaughter. The third horse and ride is black and carries a set of scales, a voice warns of the cost of food and not to waste olive oil and wine. The fourth horseman is pale green and represents death and the grave and is authorized to take a quarter of earths population with famine, disease and wild animals.
When the fifth seal is broken we are introduced to a scene of thousands of martyrs who are waiting to be avenged. They are given white robes and told to be patient. As the sixth seal is broken there is an earthquake, the sun goes black, and the moon goes blood red. Everyone on the earth runs to hide in caves and even wishes to be crushed by rocks to avoid the wrath of the ‘One on the Throne’ and the Lamb.
So what are we to do with this in a practical way in our daily lives as readers more than two thousand years later? Great question. That is exactly what I was asking Spirit to show me this morning. As was meditating it occurred to me that our internal experiences as humans often are reflected on the outside world. So within, so without, as above, so below. We go through seasons in our lives that feel a lot like what the four horsemen represent. We all have the proverbial angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other that are fighting for our attention and soul.
Could all of this metaphorically represent seasons in our life, sometimes we feel on top of the world and victorious, other times we are in a battle where we just seem to catch a break, other times when our resources and how we use them seem way out of whack and we can’t see to get in balance, and times when we are just in a season of loss or illness or both. I know I have also had seasons where I was doing everything ‘right’ but still seemed to be down for the count and felt like these martyrs waiting to be avenged. I know I have also felt like there are times when my own behavior and bad habits have me wanting to take cover from the consequences.
Again this kind of circles around to the concept of patterns and cycles. Until we can somehow learn to transcend our circumstances with our attitude. Which I think is the whole point of the christian or spiritual journey. It is was the way that Jesus invited us to and what he role modeled. How to get out of the war within by living in a new way. A new consciousness, a new experience that is when we can find our whole identity in Christ and in love. Then and only then will the war within end. There is hope that we can rise above our circumstances with seeking God wholeheartedly.
