Revelation 4: 11
““You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased.””
This chapter of Revelation set the stage for the next phase of John’s vision or prophecy. There are references to the Old Testament and visions that are very similar to those of Ezekiel and Daniel. Just as a reminder I am not a scholar or theologian, just a regular person reading the Bible for the first time. So I am not going to go into the historical context, the cross references etc.. that this chapter is likely talking about, just what the word spoke to me. This is the really cool thing about this book, that even if you are not a scholar, historian etc.. this book will still be relevant, it is so deep, rich, nuanced and multilayered.
First let me give a quick summary of the vision. God is sitting on a throne sitting shining with jewels and emerald. Surrounding him are 24 thrones with 24 elders sitting in the thrones with crowns. Then there are seven torches inside that circle. Then God is surrounded by 4 beasts that each have 6 wings covered in eyes. The four beasts have faces, one is a lion, the second an ox, the third a human, and the fourth an eagle. The beings are giving praise to God day and night and every time they do the 24 elders bow down. We are also told that the 7 torches represent the sevenfold nature of God.
I see patterns of things represented by the 24 thrones, 7 torches and the 4 creatures. I think most interpretations of this book say that these things represent the tribes and churches and things that were historical at the time. But I know that these numbers are also very significant in other was, for example the number 7 represents completeness. We also track time with all of these numbers. 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, 12 months in a year, 4 seasons. Larger patterns like help us understand laws that govern our physical and dimensional existence. They help us translate the laws into order. We order time into patterns so that we can order and pattern our existence to help us make ‘sense’ of our lives and existence.
God is the creator of all of it. So even time itself sits at the feet of His throne, all aspects of time. All the laws of nature and physics bow in his presence. We as humans bow down to the laws of physics and time. All of creation, the beasts that toil the fields, the predators, humans and birds of the air all bow to the same laws. We all seem to know our place in the world better when we give proper recognition to the laws that govern us. We also get the benefit of order when we respect and learn to love the laws.
Law and order, cause and effect, action and reaction. Everything has a consequence, we don’t exist in a vacuum, neither do our words, deeds or thoughts. When we resist and treat the laws that govern us with contempt, defiance and pride we reap the consequences of our foolishness. Many want to ‘blame’ God for their suffering rather than looking in the mirror and then thanking him, repenting and getting their act together, so that they can begin to receive the blessings from getting in agreement with his laws.
These patterns of behavior are so predictable and were repeated over and over again in the Old Testament. They happened at the individual level, at the group level and at the larger collective levels. The stubbornness of humans to always think they can be the exception to the rules. To continuously and repeatedly ‘tempt fate’. We never seem to learn, or most of us seem to need to learn the hard way. Jesus came to break the law and create a new order. A new way to experience and understand God’s laws that was something that we could get so excited about if we could understand and receive the message we would freely become slaves to it creating the ultimate new order.
