📝 Reflection
Revelation 3: 15-17, 20-21
' “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.
“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne. '
Most of us live average lives that we convince ourselves that we are content with. But God is not average and he made us in his image. So it makes sense that he made us to be so much more, which is why most of us live lives of ‘quiet desperation’. That is a famous quote from Henry David Thoreau “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation going to the grave with the song still in them.”
He put that song in us, he wants us to sing it, belt it out. The conundrum that we are faced with is that living our life fully, instead of lukewarm requires us to get out of our comfort zone. We like being comfortable, safe, secure even if it means we are quietly desperate inside. Growth, transformation and becoming more of who we were created to be requires us to leave old ways, old ideas, old relationships, old beliefs, and old patterns behind.
We don’t like to leave these behind, we feel disloyal, unkind, obligated. But if we try to change and hold onto things it is like being neither hot or cold. I can remember when I was a kid and sometimes I would fill my tub up with water and the temp wouldn’t be quite right, I would have to temper it with hot or cold water depending on which way it was off balance for my liking. This is what we do with a lot of life. Certain things we want or dream about require letting go of certain old ways, people, places etc.
We might even be ready and have even tried to sing our song, but maybe a well meaning person in your life cautioned you against it for one reason or another. People who live lives of quiet desperation often try to keep others quiet too. Not always consciously and the intention might be good or well meaning, but you listen and you agree and quiet back down. What about what God says? Do we care as much about what he is saying to us?
As I was reading this, I also had a vision, of a throne sitting over my head. My executive self, my higher self, my spirit that is in line with how God designed me sitting in that throne making decisions vs. worldly input. He is he is knocking at the door of our hearts, but we have to open the door. He doesn’t barge in, we have to step up and take the actions required. Be brave enough to let go like a trapeze artist has to let go of one bar to grab the new one.
He also reminds us how alluring and deceiving trap of self sufficiency and worldly success is. If we think this is the mark of success and are self satisfied then we are ‘wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked’ - woah! We know this is true, because how often do we hear death bed confessionals of I wish I had more time to tell people I love them, care for people, have meaningful experiences. No one is ever wishing for more money, more time at work, more cars, more time to clean or decorate their house at the end of their life.
Wake up to life and the fullness of the song you are here to sing before it is too late. “I know all the things you do, and that you have a reputation for being alive—but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what little remains, for even what is left is almost dead. I find that your actions do not meet the requirements of my God. ‘ (Rev 3:1-2)
Are you living lukewarm? How? What song is in your heart?
“One day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted to do, do it now” - Paulo Choelho
BTW, Paulo didn’t write his first book until he was 38, even though he knew he wanted to be a writer years earlier, his parents didn’t want him to do that, they didn’t think he would earn a good enough living. He went to law school as expected and desired, but he dropped out eventually to pursue his passion. The world has been blessed by him and so many others who awake to their calling and sign their life song. He is pouring himself out in service to his diving calling and blessing and helping others in the process. This makes God happy I believe and we are seated with him on his throne when we do this. One of my favorite authors, you should check him out if you aren’t familiar with him. He wrote his first book The Alchemist after having a spiritual awakening on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.
