3 John: 9-11
'I wrote to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the leader, refuses to have anything to do with us. When I come, I will report some of the things he is doing and the evil accusations he is making against us. Not only does he refuse to welcome the traveling teachers, he also tells others not to help them. And when they do help, he puts them out of the church. Dear friend, don’t let this bad example influence you. Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do good prove that they are God’s children, and those who do evil prove that they do not know God. '
So first and second John were about how to deal with false teachers. Now in third John we have who to help true teachers. He is writing to his friend Gaius to encourage him and others to help the traveling teachers and ministers who are spreading the good news and the gospel. There is a power hungry leader in their local church who is not helping and is punishing those who do.
This is not good leadership. So here we are getting the opposite side of the message from 2 John. When there are good leaders and teacher we are to bring them into our homes and encourage them. Even when there is a threat from a bad leader to go against. He is showing who he truly is and his results speak for themselves.
A true and good leader does not try to control others and ask people to only listen to them and close their hearts to the truth. This leader has let his ego get out of control and he not with God. You can’t be with god and with your ego. I love the acronym for ego- edging god out. This is exactly what happens when the ego gets in control usually fear and control are hand in hand.
We humans are so vulnerable and in a group where a leader is in a position and has their ego in control of them, they will use tactics like fear, punishment, banishment from the group as leverage to keep people in line. It is sad because without encouragement and strong enough conviction even people who know the truth will allow themselves to be silenced and will go along with the group and the popular opinion. This complicit agreement is just as bad and sad.
So we are to encourage ourselves and others to keep our literal and metaphorical homes open. Keep your mind, heart, spirit and soul open to the truth and encourage all who have the courage to spread and teach the truth even when there are forces against it. Results speak for themselves in the end. I pray that I will always have the courage to be on the side of truth by encouraging and teaching it. Those who are only for the truth of their own ego and agendas will be revealed eventually and so will those who follow such leaders.
I am a work in progress just like many of you. I haven’t always been this strong in my convictions. I once was a follower who just want to be liked and definitely got myself into some trouble with my people pleasing ways. I drank just because I thought this is what I was supposed to do, because it is everywhere. I indulged in too much food, fancy vacations, big houses, nice cars, all the things. It looked good from the outside, but the results eventually revealed themselves. I was empty and trying to fill it with things, it didn’t work. Not there is anything wrong with any of these things in and of themselves- but it is the motivation behind what your are doing that matters. Are you driven by love or fear? Identity in your divine oneness with God or in what people think of you?
