1 John 5: 6-9
“And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross—not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony. So we have these three witnesses— the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and all three agree. Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son.”
How do you believe in something that you can’t see, prove scientifically, explain in logical terms. You just have to know and believe in other ways. We can’t see wind, but we know it exists. We feel it and we see its effects. Just because you can’t see, prove or explain logically doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
John makes the argument that since we can believe human testimony we should be able to believe the testimony of the creator of humans even more. That being, God gives his own testimony. Not just once but in three ways. The water of the baptism of his Son Jesus, the blood of Jesus on the cross and the Holy Spirit.
The water marked the beginning of Jesus’s ministry and blood marked the end of his physical ministry on earth but a brand new beginning for the good news and for humanity. Similarly water is transformed into new life by being converted into blood into the human body. Likewise our believing in God and fully experiencing God’s love will completely transform our experience. Before it was beautiful and served a purpose, like water satisfies thirst.
The good news that Jesus came to deliver and show us the way is living water, it is life sustaining like blood. Our soul, our heart, our minds know this, through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit speaks to us when we get in tune. Well actually the spirit is speaking but we don’t hear because we are moving to fast and living in the world and starving our poor spirits.
When I began my own spiritual journey nearly 20 years ago it was very slow, very cautious and very shallow at first. I kind of bargained with myself that even though there was part of me that thought it was silly or weird that it seems to be a win win proposition to live as if I believed, pray as if I believed and slowly and gently the Holy Spirit began to show me and give me signs that God was as real as anything that I could see even more real a lot of times.
I have no other explanation for many things that have happened and that continue to happen. I call them Godincindences. God winks, divine appointments whatever you want to call them. There is undoubtedly something at work that is greater, unseen that we are all apart of. Love is the common themes in many world religions and traditions. Jesus is unique to the Christian tradition. There is historical record of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. On the cross he was pierced in the side and water and blood came out.
I choose to believe, in my walk and experience it would require more faith and belief to not believe in God. Finally going deeper into my own faith and reading the book that the faith is based on seemed like a good thing to do finally. Owning my faith, letting the word and God speak directly to my spirit, heart, mind and soul directly. It has been nothing short of an adventure and transformational. Like water being converted into life blood 🩸. I understand first hand what John is trying to convey here, because I have experienced it.
In order to experience it you must open your mind, your heart, your spirit and hear God. Seek and ye shall find, knock and the door will be opened. If you can believe your fellow humans about ideas, concepts and even ever evolving scientific ‘facts’, maybe you should give the creator and designer of all of it a chance? What have you got to lose? Do you believe but find yourself too busy to really give more than a few minutes hear from God? Do you relegate your spiritual life to going to church?
No judgement here- I did this for a long time. I was spiritually malnourished. I believed in God, sort of, but to use John’s words I wasn’t practicing my belief. I was practicing some religious activities, which is much different. I am practicing love, humility and grace these days, that is much more challenging but in such a good way. It requires me to slow down, live intentionally, stay engaged in prayer and meditation, stay engaged with God and what I believe about him, study and get to know Jesus, practice the pause, live in the in between, cultivate consciousness and conscientiousness. Jesus is not for the weak or faint of heart, quite the opposite. He requires strong conviction, devotion to the way, dying to the self to become a new creation.
