1 John 1: 5-7
'This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. '
So I am going to go in a couple of different directions with this today, so bare with me. First, John is not only saying that God is love but that God is light. So why is he asking us to think of God as light? Simultaneously he is asking us to examine our hearts, self awareness and honesty. In verse 8 he says : ‘If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.’ So since we are human we are imperfect and will sin, make mistakes and hurt each other either intentionally or unintentionally. It is just our nature.
The more spiritually enlightened person will be walking in the light of humility, self awareness and honesty. They will be practiced in letting the light of love and grace inside which will shine into all the dark corners illuminating our motivations. Practice in the spiritual life does not make perfect. It is all practice, there is no arrival. God’s love and light shine on and illuminate all of our humanness with grace. There is no shame by acknowledging our humanity. When we act out of our darkness, we can quickly bring into the light and let it go, repent and repair.
We are messy, complex and miraculous. It is really a miracle that such self motivated creatures have figured out how to live in community together and get along as well as we do. Add God to the mix and it can become heavy on earth. We have fellowship with each other. We can commit together to casting out spiritual darkness by embracing the light. Letting His light shine on ALL of it.
The other direction that God took me in this morning was with the words sin and sing. When we accept and bring our sin into the light and we are no longer in spiritual darkness maybe this also free us to sing. Sing with joy, fellowship with others in beautiful harmony. Imagine for a moment if we are no longer worried about competing, winning and one upping each other the amount of energy that would be freed up. Imagine then all of that energy and sense of freedom within each person. We would be letting our life sing and not sinning as much trying to connive and get our way.
We would feel free to bring our dreams, talents and gifts to the world and sing them out loud. Instead many of us hide these things away in the dark. We fool ourselves, we perform and pretend. Our lights are dim and we become more vulnerable to the sins bitterness, sadness, envy, lust, greed, laziness, fear, perfectionism, pride etc..
