📝 Reflection
2 Peter 3:15-18
'And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him— speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction. You already know these things, dear friends. So be on guard; then you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing. Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.'
In these two chapters Peter is giving a stern warning to be on guard with false teachers. False teachers will be marked by pride and arrogance. This is the temptation of being half hearted in the seeking of knowledge. It is easy to get puffed up with head knowledge. Full knowledge that includes wholehearted seeking of knowledge is humbling.
It is good to have a refresher with what the root word of human, humble, and humility is; humus. Hummus means of the earth. When you think of stability another word often used is grounded, solid - earthly. When we are prideful and arrogant we think of ourselves as higher than and lofty. This is a very unstable and ungrounded position to be in.
When we make it a priority to stay humble, we make it a priority to stay grounded and to be stable. Humility keeps us in position of open heartedness, knowing that we don’t know it all. Also in order to be stable and grounded in our faith, we must make a consistent commitment to stay in the word and in spiritual disciplines for ourselves. If we become spiritually dependent on others we become more vulnerable to false teachers.
There are many who know enough to sound and look like the real deal. They can be very convincing. If you are not stable in your own understanding you can be easily be led astray. You can also become a false teacher yourself. You can become puffed up in your own knowledge and efforts of goodness, and deceive yourself that you are transformed and have it ‘all together’.
You must grow in the grace and knowledge for fully and for and by yourself. When your heart has been truly transformed by love and grace you will be humble. That is just the way it works. Similar to James saying that faith without works is dead. Love and grace without humility is dead. It does not compute. Those who are half hearted and full of knowledge Peter compares to dogs who will return to their vomit and washed pigs that will return to their mud. Yikes 😬.
Love that professes to be love with out grace and humility is hollow and unstable. The professor of this will reveal their true nature eventually. The same is true for ourselves. Never think that you have ‘got it’. Stay humble and disciplined with your spiritual life. You must nurture and care for your spirit just like you do your physical body. Then you will be keep your footing secure and not be as vulnerable to be carried away by false teachers and knowledge.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
How are you stable in your knowledge of love and grace? Are you humble? Are you feeding your spirit regularly? Do you see feeding and caring for your spirit as optional and only as a thing to maybe do if you have ‘extra’ time? How can you prioritize this more?
