Day 337- The Power of Light

📝 Reflection

2 Peter 1: 16-19

“For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes when he received honor and glory from God the Father. The voice from the majestic glory of God said to him, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain.”

Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.”

‘You must pay close attention to what they wrote’. Scripture and this beautiful life manual called the Bible is meant to be read carefully, savored, meditated on, chewed on, swallowed and digested. It is nourishing to the spirit part of our triune selves. Sadly, most of us live life with a malnourished and starving spirit. Many of us, including me🙋‍♀️, stay in the infancy or childhood stage of our spiritual development. Where we are treating the Bible like baby food, and being spoon fed by others, or maybe you are reading it but you are still looking to others for understanding. You aren’t reading it for yourself in a careful way, paying close attention.

I finally decided to do this for myself this year through this ‘rise and shine’ adventure. It has been nothing short of transforming. I am a different person than I was 337 days ago. I feel like I have finally entered into spiritual maturity. This is by no means meant to be boastful. Spiritual maturity has no place of ‘arrival’. As Richard Rohr accurately refers to it in his book “Falling Upward”, it is a paradoxical place to be where you finally understand that you really don’t understand much at all.

Peter’s words here accurately describe my experience this year. After completing the OT I felt like a lamp was on in a dark room. Although at that time, it felt like a very bright light, because I had no other point of reference. As I began this process with the NT, and the eyes of my heart were becoming adjusted to the light of Jesus Christ, the light kept getting brighter and brighter. Until one day I had what I call my ‘humble crumble’. The power of Jesus light blinded me at first.

I kind of had a Humpty Dumpty experience. I became so blinded by the power of His light that I lost my balance and fell off. Everything I thought I knew was just a shadow on the wall caused by the light of a lamp in a dark room. Coming into the light of God’s love was completely overwhelming at first. It wrecked me, in a good way, for awhile. I realized all of my trying so hard to be ‘good’ was causing the opposite in my life. This is what shadows do, they can fool us into thinking there is something accurate and real that we are seeing and doing.

This is what the OT vs. the NT shows us. But you really must read it carefully for yourself. You must open the eyes and ears of your heart. The mind is deceiving. It likes to have logical and theological arguments that stop the light from coming on. You will be kept in the dark room with just a lamp light of understanding. But God knows that coming into the light must be a gradual process. We have to adjust our eyes to light.

This beautiful example of the dawn and the gradual process of brightening of light and the morning star shining brightly. If we get light too much to fast we can’t see at first, and many will want to return to the dimly lit space. It is more comfortable and familiar there. When you have been in the bright light conversely if you try to back into a dimly lit space you have the same problem. Once you are a child of the light, you live in a new way, you will have a hard time going back. But with your new understanding about the power of light you can have compassion and grace for those who are still only in dimly lit room. You will be the light to them just by your presence and example.

Another great example to read to help you further understand what Peter is talking about is Plato’s allegory of the cave. If you haven’t read this, I really encourage you to take a few minutes to look it up, read it and consider it’s implications in your own life. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. Light is energy, spirit is energy, human beings are energy. If you are only concerned about your physical body and you think this is the fullness of life, think again… Do you keep filling yourself up with food, things, titles and still feel empty or never quite satisfied long term. It fills you up for the moment but then you are searching again? Your spirit is trying to get your attention.

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

How are you feeding your spiritual body? How are you taking care of it and nourishing it? Are you living in spiritual dimness or darkness?
