1 Peter 3: 17
'Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong! '
Peter is hitting us with some truth here. If you read between the lines what he is revealing is that we think we have a choice about suffering. This is an illusion. If you are human you will suffer during your life here on earth. You have the option to suffer for doing good or doing wrong. Options and choices are different. We don’t have choices about some things.
Life is hard sometimes. We often ‘choose’ the easy the easy thing in the moment under the illusion that we are avoiding hard. This isn’t true. We are just delaying or picking the option of a different type of hard later. I remember this truth hitting me hard a few years ago. There is a popular quote ‘out there’ in the mainstream “choose your hard”. There is no avoiding hard. This was a ‘hard pill’ to swallow (pun intended). But it was also very liberating.
Once you realize the illusion of choice it makes it easier to surrender and embrace suffering and discomfort that you have to ‘choose’ to get the results you want in life. To get the good stuff you have to be willing to suffer. If you choose the easy, comforting and indulgences now you are simultaneously choosing suffering and hard stuff later in the form of negative consequences. Your choice - or rather option.
