📝 Reflection
James 4:13-16
'Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil. '
I don’t know about you but I have a tendency to plan, move at my own pace and often race ahead of God. Walking with God and living life at God’s divine pace takes practice. Lots of practice and you need to add certain practices to your life that support developing this skill. Things like a solid morning routine that include prayer, meditation, reading God’s word and deep thinking about it. Building margin into your life to breathe and spend time in things like stillness, meditative walking in nature simply being.
There are lots of options, the point is that you need intentional time to intentionally connect with God, source, divine consciousness. Whatever your higher power is. For me it is God. This time allows you to learn how to navigate life. How to listen to divine guidance and your inner GPS. Sometimes I get so confident that I know where I am going and what God wants me to do that I speed up so fast that I miss the still small voice that tells me that the route has changed, traffic up ahead, re-route, detour, go this way not that way etc..
Have you done this too? I thought so, probably too many times to count like me. Sometimes I get my self so turned around and feel so lost, I don’t know which way is up or down. The great thing about God is that he is always there waiting for you when you are ready. We just have to slow down and reconnect. His ways are not our ways, but if you lean in and get willing to be uncomfortable as you adjust your speed you will find that life is better lived at this divine pace and place of grace.
This pace of walking with God allows you to be fully human, it does’t ask for or require perfection. Quite the opposite. It does require you to get humble. Humble enough to ask for directions. Humble yourself enough to make your plans but hold them all loosely. Be willing to want what God wants for you and your life above what you want in the moment. Sometimes your preferences will be granted other times you will be asked to walk away what you think you want or it will walk away from you. This can be hard, confusing and painful at times. Just know that he always has something better in store and one day you will be grateful for missing out on somethings that you thought you had to have.
In the sales world we have the saying that ‘rejection is protection’. I believe this is often true, but it certainly does’t always feel that way at the time. Rejection often feels like rejection, except when you are walking with God. He will come into the quiet and reassure you by whispering to your heart that it will be ok, not only ok but even better! He works all things together for the good for those that love Him and are called according to His purpose. This is His promise and He always keeps His promises. Like Paul reminded us we have to have faith, walk in faith, which means walking with God and at his divine pace, meeting him in the divine place. Your heart, so that they eyes and ears of your heart can see and hear.
He will never you lead you astray. He is our good, loving and merciful shepherd. We can certainly lead ourselves astray, though, just like sheep. I have been there done that and have the t-shirt. I choose to stay in step with him to the best of my ability. I am human so somedays and seasons are better than others. But I have learned what my red flags are where the yellow cones are on God's highway for my life. My practice of stillness, meditating on his word, self care, good sleep, space in my day to just be, safe people to pray, council and vent with when my ego needs to have a temper tantrum or pity party.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
Who are you walking through life with? How are you walking through life? What is your pace, are you racing? Are you worrying and ruminating about the past? Are you living in fear and anxiety about the future? Can you slow down and connect to your divine and loving creator and breath in the love and peace that he has waiting for you?
