James 1: 22, 25
“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”
But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. '
Buckle up, James is going to take us for a truth ride. He is going to dive deep and challenge us. He is calling us out! If your faith is not lived out with action, is it really faith? We must use it or we will lose it.
This is true of the human condition in general. If you don’t use your muscles, you will lose them. If you don’t use your brain, you will lose mental sharpness. If you don’t use gratitude, you will lose your joy. What make us think our spiritual life is any different?
Faith is useful not only in our spiritual life but in everything. Faith as Paul outlined in Hebrews is the activity of moving toward something that you will believe will happen but it hasn’t happened yet. It is an activity that is in forward progressive motion.
In fact not only are we supposed to use our faith to activate it, but we are encouraged to embrace challenges, struggle and testing of our faith. This not only activates it but it strengthens and amplifies it. It puts ‘flesh’ on it. We embody it. This is how it travels from head knowledge to heart knowing. Paul talked about it being written on our hearts, this is how it happens.
“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”
Another paradox for you in God’s upside down world; be obedient to His word and his perfect law and he will set you free. Obedience is another active word. We can’t earn God’s love, we are loved regardless of what we do or don’t do. This truth and reality helps us to evaluate our motives of our activities or ‘works’. If you are trying to perform for love, acceptance and approval it doesn’t work. But when you realize how much you are loved and that you are a part of God and he is in you and in your fellow humans, then this will motivate you to want to do good works. This is the way it works.
If you receive the magnitude of this reality of it and it doesn’t motivate you, do you really believe or have faith in it? Kind of like, which comes first the chicken or the egg? Faith without works is dead. Listening and learning without doing is useless. Knowledge alone is not powerful, knowledge applied is power. This is an act of faith that is being used instead of lost.
