📝 Reflection
Hebrews 9: 16-18
'Now when someone leaves a will, it is necessary to prove that the person who made it is dead. The will goes into effect only after the person’s death. While the person who made it is still alive, the will cannot be put into effect. That is why even the first covenant was put into effect with the blood of an animal. '
This explanation that Paul gives finally helps me make sense of the idea of blood sacrifice. When we look at it through the lens or analogy of a last will and testament. The property, promises, inheritance cannot be distributed until the person has died. Proof must be offered of the death, by showing of blood. So interesting. I can understand the logic of the old testament ways a little better now with the help of this.
It is also interesting that the word used to describe someones last official wishes, promises and or inheritance is ‘will’. They get to use their free will to decide who gets their ‘things’. We use our free will to determine our behavior. What determines our behavior is our attitude toward life, ourselves and others.
If we are all about the self, the ego, the short term and more impulsive self we are setting ourselves up for a having to rely on rules and regulations to govern and monitor our behavior. We need these to know how to interact with others and how to manage our wants and desires. This is a relationship with life from the outside in. I need to look outside myself to make sure what I want is ‘ok’ or not. As I break rules, sin and don’t meet others expectations I need to atone. To get back into good graces with society, church, and family. You have to repeatedly ‘sacrifice’ your pride, ego and desires to get back into ‘at one ment’ with others.
When your heart has been transformed by love. You are committed to dying to the ego. Your own will has been changed. Your will no longer competes with others ‘wills’. You no longer need the ‘rules’ the way others do. You naturally and freely behave more in alignment with others and love. Your heart has been transformed by love. You live from the inside out. It is a one time sacrifice, all be it a big one. Like that symbolized by Jesus. You sacrifice your need to live by the ego and live by love instead. But you are freed from it at the same time, willingly.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
So are you living by the will of your ‘flesh’, the will of love, the will of others? What promise are you inheriting, the promise that the law brings which is death or the promise of love which is eternal life?
