Day 324- Rise & Shine ✨Together
Power of Love
Hebrews 7- 16, 18-19
'Jesus became a priest, not by meeting the physical requirement of belonging to the tribe of Levi, but by the power of a life that cannot be destroyed. For the law never made anything perfect. But now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God. Yes, the old requirement about the priesthood was set aside because it was weak and useless.’
By the power of a life that cannot be destroyed… Wait what? What is going on in this chapter. I felt like I opened up the parables and the OT again. I really geeked out this morning. It was fun to read some complicated text and ideas presented in this reading from Hebrews. Paul starts this section of the letter by going back to Melchizedek. He was the priest king of Salem back in the time of Abraham. He was interesting because there is no record of his birth or death. He was just walking with God and went up to heaven.
The name Melchizedek means king of justice or righteousness. He was the King of Salem, which means king of peace. So he was a priest and a king. In the Jewish tradition priests can only be from the tribe of Levi. Melchizedek was from the tribe of Judah, as was David and as was Jesus. So they are not from the tribe of priests or of the rules or law. We know that the law brings death. It is impossible to keep, which by its very nature then creates sin. So the solution was just to keep making more and more rules, rituals and sacrifices.
Jesus like David and Melchizedek are not from the levites, they are from another way. The way of love. Love, a power of life that cannot be destroyed. Love builds and creates energy. Laws and rules drain life and energy. Of course we need laws, but they are not the source of life. They are simply guard rails.
When you live in the way of love, then a natural by product; the fruits of the spirit make the rules not as ‘necessary’ for those in the way. They follow them and subject themselves to and respect them willingly but they themselves don’t ‘need’ them. Kind of like training wheels on a bike. They are for those who don’t yet know how to ride and balance on the bike. Jesus came to teach us how to live and balance ourselves in life, by the way of love. The gate is narrow and the path is narrow and difficult to stay on but once you find it you are set free. You are saved from the death of the trying to keep the law.
