📝 Reflection
Hebrews 6: 16-18
'Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. '
Thank God that God keeps his word. It is impossible for him to lie. But just in case he even bound his word to an oath. This really got me thinking about how often I honor my own word. I do a much better job at it now than I used to, especially to myself. That this the word and the promise that I would not honor the most.
Do you do that too? Make promises and oaths to others and stay true, but not to yourself? After awhile this kind of self betrayal is really damaging. I was so tired of letting myself down and making excuses. So I finally decided to do what Paul is talking about here. I starting holding myself accountable by making myself accountable to others for holding my word to myself for myself.
I turned my people pleasing ways to my advantage and put it to work for me instead of against me. It has really made all the difference. While I built the skill of honoring my own word, being in community with others and working with good coaches really helped me do that! Now I keep my word and my promises to myself because I have built that trust back up with myself but it took awhile and a lot of patience and practice.
Honestly the process involves a lot of faith. A big reason many of us don’t keep our word to ourselves is that we want the proof and the evidence first before we make the effort. But that’s not the way it works we get the proof and the evidence after we honor our word and live in faith working towards God’s promises and our goals, dreams and desires.
Often our desires are a result of hearing God’s voice and him placing that vision in our hearts. They reference the story of Abraham here and the oath that God took. He gave Abraham the vision and the promise of many descendants. '“This is what the Lord says: Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies. And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed—all because you have obeyed me.” 'Genesis 22:16-18
Not all desires, dreams and visions are God’s promises to us. You can know the difference by putting them through the filter of His Word. Which means you have to be in His word consistently so you will know His voice and if it ‘fits’. The desires He places in your heart will never harm others, will not harm you and are not merely to satisfy fleshly immediate unhealthy impulses . Look to the fruits of the spirit for more insight. His desires for you will also benefit others, because we are all one. He is in us and we are in Him and He is love. Stay close to His heart, by staying in the word and living by and for love and he will keep his promises and his oath. And he will help you keep yours!!
