📝 Reflection
Hebrews 4: 1-3
'God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it. For this good news—that God has prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God. For only we who believe can enter his rest. …
Man I really needed this message this morning. As I am writing this is a Friday, after a long week of work my soul just relaxed a bit reading the word rest so many times. I absolutely love my work, I pour myself into it and I stretch myself everyday and feel like I am always learning and growing. I am so blessed and grateful. But God also designed us for rest. All work and no play or rest makes me and you dull, tired and grumpy.
Rest though as God intends for us, His rest must be entered into. What does this mean? It seems like this is rest is not just ‘not doing’ something. In fact the rules in the old testament probably made rest feel like a job instead of true rest. So how do you enter into God’s rest that he has already prepared for you?
I think there are a few clues in this chapter. Enter is an active word. Also one must listen to God and know that rest is available, but it must be combined with faith. One must believe and have faith that the rest is available to them. Many of us are to restless to truly enter rest. I have found that the more time I spend at God’s feet every morning I am building the skill of entering into rest. I am engaged in stillness, by doing this I have felt that I am giving my spirit the chance to do what it needs to do to connect to God.
I am not sure how to explain it any better than this, the more time I spend in the word and thinking deeply about it, contemplating and meditating that I feel my soul at rest and peace. My head and heart get a chance to connect in this sacred time. But this does’t happen without consistency. Just like you can’t feel rested by sleeping only a few hours or one night a week. It is a daily practice. Also, you can’t ‘bank’ sleep or rest.
There are also so many reference throughout the Bible to eating and drinking. I think our spirits are meant to be fed and nourished regularly, daily just like we must eat and drink daily. We can’t just eat once in a while and feel nourished. Our bodies can’t go with out water for very long. Yet many of us treat our spirits like something that can be just satisfied by a Sunday church service, a good worship song now and then, praying just when we remember or only when we ‘need’ something.
We don’t treat our spirits as a ‘legitimate’ part of our selves, it is mostly along for the ride and is lucky to get any leftover’s and after thoughts we might offer it. What if you treated yourself like the spiritual being that you are that is having a bodily experience. Instead many of us are asleep to this truth and think we are our bodies. Our spirits are starving and malnourished and it is crying out for nourishment and many of us misinterpret these signals and turn to food, alcohol, TV, our screens, shopping etc.. to fill the void.
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable. '
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
What if you believed that you were a home for the holy spirit. What if you listened and lived by faith in that. What if you nourished your spirit consistently? Do you think you could enter into God’s rest? Why not give it a try?
