Philemon 1: 16
'He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord. '
In this letter to Philemon Paul is ‘requesting’ that Philemon welcome his former slave Onesimus back. I put requesting in quotes, because to me it didn’t really feel like a request, Paul used a couple of very strong references to the fact that he could command and that Philemon owed him, but that he wasn’t using these facts, instead he was ‘asking’ nicely. 😂 Anyway that aside, his intent to restore and uplift Onesimus was really quite admirable.
This letter is intentionally tongue in cheek with more than this request. The name Onensimus means useful. So Paul uses this meaning to make his plea on Onesimus’s behalf. He acknowledges that Philemon may have regarded Onesimus as not useful, since he ran away from his position as a slave to Philemon. He is reassuring Philemon that Onesimus has proven very useful.
He has become a changed man, who is serving Paul and preaching the word. Paul is encouraging Philemon not only to welcome him back, but to welcome him back as a bother and friend. ‘Welcome him as you would welcome me and if he still owes you anything, I will pay his debt’. So he is uplifting him though encouragement but also quite literally by lifting his status from slave to brother and friend.
He is testifying to his usefulness and the merits of his service to the growing church and personally to Paul. So as Philemon, I assume, grants this request he is confirming Onesimus’s redemption and lifting him up to a new status and relationship which has to be uplifting to the whole community. Slave to brother, useless to useful, there is always hope. As long as you are still breathing you can turn your life around.
