Day 318- How to be in alignment

📝 Reflection

Titus 1: 9, 3:9-11

'He must have a strong belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with wholesome teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong. '

'If people are causing divisions among you, give a first and second warning. After that, have nothing more to do with them. Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These things are useless and a waste of time. For people like that have turned away from the truth, and their own sins condemn them.'

This letter is written by Paul to an associate named Titus who was in Greece on the island of Crete to help church leaders. So this letter specifically addresses the how, who, what of church leaders and how they should be conducting themselves and living so the church could stay as healthy and harmonious as possible. The Way of the early church was to live from the place of a changed heart rather than rules. Living from the inside out reflects what is in the heart.

Based on this if people are living from a changed heart within based on love and grace then they will naturally choose to live a certain way and adopt behaviors that are in alignment with this. So things Paul points out are things like: not drinking, humble, not quick to anger, love what is good and just, encouraging, leading by example, self control, respect, patience, doing good works, gentleness, living wisely….

So if you know who you are and what you believe and understand what this should reflect in your habits and life then you know how to stay in alignment. It takes effort, intentionality and guard rails. One of the guard rails Paul outlines is to be careful of having people in your life and community that are not in alignment. He introduces the three strike rule. Give a first and second warning, but on the third occasion have nothing more to do with them.

This seems harsh, at least to me, or at least it used to. But now that I understand more about human behavior and how vulnerable we are to being influenced, I can see the wisdom. This doesn’t mean that you don’t love people who are not living in the same way you choose, it means you are dealing with reality. I used to be overly understanding and would excuse peoples behavior and try to see them for who they could be rather than who they kept showing me they were. This is not loving or honest, to them or to me. I do believe in seeing people for who they could be and treating them from this vantage point, but not at the expense of denying reality.

Jesus didn’t try to force or beg people to believe, change or follow the way. He invited them and said come follow me. He didn’t stay with them in their world and adopt their way of life. He also let people choose not to follow. He spoke in parables for this reason as well. He spoke about not throwing pearls to swine and on and on…

So in summary, know who you are what you believe and what the ‘fruit’ of this should look like in your life. Walk your talk. Put guardrails up, healthy boundaries for yourself and people you allow in your life. Have red flags to look out for in your own behavior as warning signs. Have people you trust that will hold you accountable. Periodically intentionally check in and do a review, audit and update if necessary. Live consciously, surround yourself with encouragement and be an encouragement to others. This is how to stay in alignment. It takes some effort but it is so worth it!  Integrity has a cost, but it’s value is priceless.
