2 Timothy 3: 14
'But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. '
Such wise sage advice from Paul to Timothy. Stay anchored to the truth of God’s love and how he desires for us to live. Paul warns that there are many who will love only themselves and for the love of things like money. They will also be very religious so it might be very deceptive. These type of people are very cunning and can easily fool those who are not anchored. Just a few paragraphs back in Chapter 2 there was the warning not go get in time wasting arguments that are just a war of words.
Those who have received God’s love and grace if they don’t take the time and self discipline to cultivate it and anchor themselves to the tenets of wholesome living will go ‘wild’ with the love and freedom. I almost titled today - ‘love gone wild’. God’s love is very liberating and if it is not anchored it will lead us right over a cliff.
While God does want us to love ourselves, he doesn’t want that at the expense of not loving others. The temptation of unanchored love is that we are so in love with ourselves that we can idolize ourselves. And idolize our desires and fool ourselves into thinking they are godly desires. He warned that people that are un-anchored are boastful, proud, scoffing, disobedient, ungrateful, slandering, unloving, unforgiving, no self control, cruel, disloyal, reckless, seeking only pleasure, with not self control.
He warns Timothy to stay away from people like this. To guard himself by staying anchored. When you are anchored, even when you are exposed to certain people, other beliefs, the storms of life you can withstand the temptations. We need to also examine our own hearts. What are we anchored to? This will form our identity. This will also give us the fortitude to not be blown about by the wind and waves of life and other peoples opinions.
When we are anchored, we are strong in our identity, strong in our faith, strong in God’s love and committed to being an example of God’s light and love for others. A beacon in the storm. Paul is encouraging Timothy to be this for the church. He needs to be an anchor and he can do this by being anchored in love.
As humans we are so vulnerable, we were made with a desire to belong and we can easily be blown about from belonging to God and be confused because of our desire to be liked, accepted and avoid judgment from other humans. Ironically we will actually probably be even more respected by others for staying strong in our convictions and identity. But we will also surely be judged and experience what feels like persecution at times for not going along with what is popular and for living life differently.
