📝 Reflection
1 Timothy 6: 4-5, 9-10
'Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. '
Paul points out a couple of the traps that we humans commonly fall into when our motivations are about what others think of us. Being motivated by belonging, being accepted, being like by other humans leads us to use money, knowledge and even serving to think of ourselves as better than others. A way to impress people with how smart we are, how much money we have, our titles, our goodness through how much we serve.
Anything that we do from this place is going to lead us into ‘foolishness’ and pain not only for us but for others around us. Back to the question of motivation and the question I like to ask myself “what would love do here?’. This helps me get out of my egoic way of being. The ego often seeks belonging, safety and security by being one up on others. It makes the ego feel good, powerful and like we are doing something in the world. We are proving ourselves.
This type of motivation though is never satisfied, it is hungry and it devours. Enough is usually never enough. Humility and humbleness is the way of love. Which contrary to what your ego is telling you. It takes courage and strength to be humble. But just like with muscles, with practice and repetitions it gets easier and you get even stronger and satisfied through real love. Then the money, the titles, the authority, the serving can be put to use for good and for love, instead of just personal gain and creating a hunger that is never content or satisfied. This is a win win win and what God wants for us. Love wins!
