📝 Reflection
1 Timothy 4: 6
'If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters, Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed. '
Paul is encouraging Timothy in this section of the letter to essentially make sure that he is practicing what he is preaching. He is younger so people will be watching him even more closely. So he is under a little more pressure that maybe some of the other teachers because of this. I just love how Paul is so full of faith in Timothy though, and reminds him that if he follows the teachings he will be nourished by it simultaneously.
That is the way it work. I find that myself as a teacher, mentor and coach that I continually am reminded and given opportunities to practice what I am ‘preaching’. A good coach, mentor or teacher can only take others as far as they are willing to go themselves. This is challenging and also rewarding. But we are all teachers, mentors and leaders even if you don’t think you are. Got news for you- you are!
Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote “What you do speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you are saying”. This is so true and a good thing to keep in mind. Now mind you this is not a call to perfectionism and ‘works’. Paul’s message through out what I have read so far can be summed up in a few concepts, love God, love others, love and respect yourself, always do your best and keep your conscience clear. This is an over simplification but pretty accurate.
When you are always doing your best and focused on keeping your conscience clear there is plenty of room for being human and all the complexity and variables that we face. It allows us to be honest and vulnerable when we mess up, it allows to mess up. Our messes then have a chance to become messages and lessons for others.
This is good news as we teach and lead others. I know I was putting together a lesson myself the other day on a subject that I thought I could teach with my ‘eyes closed’. I let myself get a bit complacent and in going back to review something I realized that there was a key concept that I had not be living into and was’t even on my radar. So it is good to remind yourself that while you teach and lead to always remember to be a student, stay humble and try not to think of your self as a ‘master’ of something.
If you get up on your high horse, the universe will conspire to knock you down. It can be a hard fall for some of us. I know, I have had that fall several times. I try to keep guard rails in place now to remind myself to stay humble. That fall hurts and pride and ego are not worth it! Pride always proceeds a fall.
So go all in with humility and faith, you will have a much better outcome. Be an example for others through your actions and your life by doing your best with a clear conscience, God does not expect anymore from us. Also, the good news is he will love us regardless. But we will have a better experience of life by living in this way. He wants the best for us, and we should want it for ourselves, and it is just extra bonus and goodness that God designed it so that we bless others by it as well. This is love at work, a circle of goodness that feed and perpetuates.
