1 Timothy 1: 19
“Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.”
The difference between being useful and useless - keeping your conscience clear- in a nutshell. Paul talks about his own prior life as a persecutor of the followers of the way. That he himself blasphemed against God. But the difference was that he did it out of ignorance. What he is warning of here is deliberately going against your own conscience.
Why does this degrade our useful ness. Paul makes a comparison to a shipwreck. A ship is a very useful thing, but obviously not when wrecked. It takes a lot of energy to go against your own conscience deliberately and usually causes a whole cascade of other energy leaks to manage how we deal with and feel about it internally.
It seems like if a ship had a hole, it would be like just spending all of your energy emptying the water out of the ship with a bucket rather than spending your energy fixing the hole. And as the ship takes on more water, then it gets weaker and more holes might appear. And pretty soon you are overwhelmed.
Sound familiar? I know this is kind of how I used to live life. One problem especially one that you cause against yourself deliberately causes a whole landslide of problems and drama. This usually then crowds out or disperses our energy and power and there for our usefulness. The management of the issues caused by going against your conscience compound and grow.
Our brain is protective of us this way, it doesn’t like to experience this type of cognitive dissonance, it is painful, so in order to avoid it, it will often create secondary and tertiary dramas and issues to keep us distracted. And before you know it your life resembles the shipwreck Paul is talking about here. And because we don’t live in isolation, we can even take others down with us.
The great thing is that as long as you have breath in your lungs it is not too late. Just like Paul became useful, so can I and so can you. We have to repent, which simply means to change ones mind and go in a new direction. We can then repair. Ships can be repaired and rebuilt, so can we. No shame if this is you, this was me too. I am in the repair phase now and becoming useful again. Maybe even more useful because of what I have been through. This is the beauty of life. We can put all of our troubles, sufferings into learning and growing and encouraging others to do the same.

Does this ring a bell with you? Again, doing something out of ignorance is not the same. If you are doing something that you know is against your own conscience can you repent? Can you see how your energy is being splintered and scattered? Can you see the wisdom in bringing that back to yourself to repair and rebuild and be useful to yourself and others? In fact it is an adventure to become a life builder, to be deliberate and intentional, it takes courage and strength, but it is so worth it! Let’s rise and shine together!
