📝 Reflection
2 Thessalonians 3: 11-13
“Yet we hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling in other people’s business. We command such people and urge them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and work to earn their own living. As for the rest of you, dear brothers and sisters, never get tired of doing good.”
Idleness is much different than stillness or purposeful rest. Idleness is the avoidance of work. People were made for a purpose though. We have busy brains and body’s that feel good when they are put to use. So when we are avoiding our own work to do, our brains and body’s still want to be put to use. So we will often then do exactly what Paul is warning about here, we will meddle in other people’s business. We often can’t help ourselves, because again we were made to be ‘useful’.
This passage was a hard truth for me. As an enneagram 9, the peacemaker, my ego often tries to tell me to not do something as a way of ‘doing’ something. Weird I know. If I think doing something might not be pleasing to someone else, will disrupt the peace, my brain will try to tell me to avoid it. I had no intention of being idle, but I can now see what Paul is talking about. I would often get involved ‘helping’ others, and sometimes meddling, triangulating, worrying excessively over what I might perceive or judge as bad decisions someone else is making.
This seemed at the time a very ‘good’ way to spend my energy. I was trying to be helpful, I didn’t necessarily see it as meddling. Who wants to see that in themselves? Yuck, but sometimes the truth hurts. But when you can be honest about your motives, then you can make changes. I have no shame or guilt about it, I was doing the best I could with what I knew at the time. It was generational behavior handed down to me and even behavior that is cultivated in many religious communities.
This is almost similar to what Jesus warned about not pointing out the speck in some else’s eye when you have a log in you own. Avoiding doing your own work and what is yours to do it very common. We have a lot of limiting beliefs, fears, what if’s, people pleasing tendencies that keep us sometimes avoiding what is ours to do. It can feel so productive to be busy and caught up in drama and being ‘concerned’ about others. Our ego loves to feel important instead unsure and uncertain about our own performance and lives.
We humans are fascinating and complex creatures. Our brains and our subconscious programming is so sophisticated, even when it is ‘mis’behaving. None of this is meant to cause shame or guilt. I feel none myself. I am so grateful that my brain and subconscious take such good care of me, even when it may not be giving me the results I want. Our brains and our whole intelligence system is always trying to take care of us. We truly are walking miracles.
Our power lies in our ability to choose thoughts and to learn to harness our power by living consciously and on purpose! The power to choose lies in intention and the pause, the in between. We can’t always choose the thoughts we have but we can choose how we react and whether or not to keep or change the thoughts. Bring all of that distracted, avoiding, fear driven, ego driven energy back to yourself and you will be amazed at what you can achieve!
Paul mentions laziness here as well. I see living unconsciously as a lazy way of living. Living in reaction mode, getting in other peoples business is a form of laziness. I invite you to think of iceless and laziness in new ways today rather than just maybe the caricature that may come to mind of someone laying in a hammock when there is work to be done. There are many very busy people out there that look like they are getting lots done while avoiding their own lives and their own purpose. Think about it! I know I was one of them! Conscious living takes a lot of effort but it is worth it and it is what we were all created for!
